We just wanted to get out of the house for a few days. This park is about an hour from our home. Enjoyed the quiet of an early week stay. Except for some spring clean up but they worked quickly and moved. on. Watched boats fishing on the lake.

The sites at Portage Lake fall into two categories. Sites 1-31 are asphalt camping pads surrounded by grass and under scattered mature trees. There is a some separation between campsites, but not a tremendous amount. Sites 32 and up are grassy spots among the trees. These sites are laid out a bit more haphazardly. A few are not on level ground and others may best be managed by parallel parking rather than backing in. While some sites are fairly large, others are squeezed in fairly tight. The camp host described the paved section as the quieter of the two. He indicated that on weekends the grassy area can get noisy. We did not experience that, but stormy evenings were probably to blame. If you are looking for a quieter experience in the grassy area I would recommend the edges of the camp loop. Site 95 would be a good choice. If you have a group of several campers then the center section would allow you to group together quite easily.
The park has several activities to keep you busy. In addition to boating on the lake, there is a swimming beach. There are also several hiking trails and a disc golf course. The park is quite well-maintained and well-staffed.
One note on cell coverage. Previous reports of good coverage are erroneous or the result of using a booster. The poor coverage was lamented by the camp host as well as other campers.

Nice big swim area, some sand. Lake has boaters and residential houses. I do not think they have a fishing pier. The kids were involved in a DNR archery class. Not much for hiking. One small loop for kids(1 mile) and the entrance to a hiking trail that will go on for miles. We walked it for about a hour then turned around and walked back. Other than that not much else sticks out, a fun typical SP.

We stay here once a year as it is close to the Portage Lake and playground. Pick your site wisely. We did not have any issues with mosquitoes. We stay in late July.

Nice campground with extremely well fed mosquitoes. I understand the campground is not usually over run with mosquitoes, there has been a lot of rain this spring.
