Our site was good, but there were several in the F loop that shared a driveway with other sites, which I would've been unhappy with. They were literally on top of each other, so just be mindful of that when booking your site. The waterside sites are really nice!
My husband was fine with the bathhouse but I was a little grossed out by all the millipedes in the shower and there is no ventilation in the building which doesn't make for a great shower experience in hot, humid August. There was a cut through trail to get to the bath house on one side of the loop, but not on our side. It was a little bit of a longer walk, so it would've been nice to have a cut through path for easier access.
Good connectivity - we worked all week using AT&T with no issues.
The park is dead on the weekdays and definitely picks up on the weekends, but there is plenty of space between most of the sites so we didn't have any issues with noise.
I didn't get the impression that they clean up much between visitors. There was trash that remained along the side of the road and at the beach through our entire visit. Just a little disappointing but not a dealbreaker.
I wish there were more hiking trails - there is only one. All in all we would definitely stay here again!

I was torn between 4 and 5 stars here. It would have been 5 if we didn't have to search for a new site after finding ours wasn't usable. We had reserved ahead of time a 98ft long pull through site on the B Loop. We get to the site and its going up a hill. So you would pull in going uphill, it levels out for about 20ft then continues up the hill to where you pull back out. We're 40ft and towing so it was impossible for us to use. Luckily we were able to head over to E loop which is a no reservation loop and found a great big level site. We ended up extending our stay due to the gas shortage that hit the area right when we were supposed to leave. Overall it was a peaceful, nice campground and we'd absolutely stay here again.
FYI- there is water and electric hookups but no sewer. There is a somewhat centrally located sewer dump though.

Plenty of trash cans and the park was very clean.
If you get lucky you may get a spot on the lake which would be beautiful.
The website directions can be a little confusing. Just make sure you enter Poplar Point Campground from Beaver Creek Road and you’ll be fine.

We only stayed one night. We lucked out and we reserved C34 which is right on the water. The entire campground was booked but it was surprisingly quiet. You can access the lake from C34 so if you had your own boat or kayak you could tie them up by the site.

The campground was quiet but I imagine that’s because it’s early in the camping season here and the campground was no where near capacity. We watched squirrels build nests and dig for nuts.
My only gripe is the women’s bathroom. The toilets and sinks were clean but the showers looked like they don’t get cleaned much based on the same large clumps of hair and a bandaid that remained our entire 4 day stay. Also, the shower heads are motion activated and makes drying off a little difficult as you will get sprayed while toweling off if you get near the sensor. I used the larger accessibility shower after I sprained my ankle. The stall has a handheld showerhead that is supposed to mount on a pole but the mount was broken so I ended up sticking the showerhead between the handle rails and the wall while rocking back and forth on the bench to keep the water flowing. I’m docking a star off this review for the showers alone for the fact the showers aren’t cleaned regularly, but not for the motion activated water or the broken mount as I’m sure campers are to blame for both.
On the recreational side of things, there is one hiking trail. There’s a beach for swimming. There’s fishing and any other small boat craft activity. It was relaxing to watch the boaters out on the water fishing from the campsite. But if you bring a boat make sure you don’t have a shared driveway like our campsite did with three campsites that had a partially blocked driveway due to a neighbor having a large rig, a truck AND a boat that didn’t all fit in their space.
Funny side note: There are signs everywhere saying alcohol is prohibited in North Carolina campgrounds but the recycle bin by the restroom was FULL of wine bottles.
For those who work and travel like us, on Speedtest at 8pm on a Monday–Verizon via iPhone 12: 52 mbps down and 3 mbps up with 32 ms ping; I totally forgot to test our T-Mobile speed. I worked on T-Mobile all week even with video chat.

Now that the bad part is out of the way, the site we had was very nice. We were level enough that we really would not have had to ground the jacks. The lake view was excellent and there were birds around singing in the mornings. During the week it was not very busy, only about three or four campers in our loop. It was very peaceful during the week and felt like you were way off the beaten trail, exactly what we like. This was our first stay at poplar point so we didn't know what to expect and it was the end of January with electric only hookup, so I don't think this would be typical of high season.
We checked out other sites and I think during high season we would chose a site away from the lake, those sites are a spaced out a little more and some would give complete privacy when the leaves are on the trees.
All in all This is an excellent choice for reasonably priced camping with better than average privacy, clean sites, great dump site facility and close enough to Raleigh to take in some of the things it has to offer.

We had a fully wooded site off the water. The hookups were easily accessible and in very good shape. Many places to access the water in the park. Would have been a 5 star rating, but it was a very busy weekend with car alarms and dogs barking through the night.

The $20 Figure above is non electric and senior pricing. I think that electric sites are $29 for seniors and maybe $6 more - all sites for non senior. Ample bathrooms and showers. Gates close at nights.

If we had had children with us, we would have been unable to watch them in the water. The only way to the water was a small path down a hill through tall grass. Traffic was steady on the road, and the atmosphere just wasn't what we like. Plus, the site beside us was overflowing with people and vehicles, clearly breaking the rules, and when rangers rode by they didn't even slow down. Even though this is the closest state park to where we live, I doubt we'll return.
