The campground at Pony Express is limited to primitive camping only, and I would wager never full. The designated camping areas are split between two, one on the east side that has 10 campsites, and one on the west side that I didn’t see separate markers.
The east side campsite is near the large circle drive/roundabout, it is largely unshaded and out in the open but you do have a view of the lake. There are steel fire rings so I believe two campsites share one ring. There are also picnic tables. The parking lot is very large and well maintained. The lake is just a quick walk down the hill, complete with a fish cleaning station and there is a hidden little cemetery nearby that predates the lake.
The camping area on the west side has far more shade, the fire rings are made from from stacked rock, and there are some picnic tables. The parking area is also quite large. While I would probably prefer this side, the lake access is not as good, but it offers far more privacy.
Overall there isn’t much to explore here, but if I needed a place to roost for a night, I wouldn’t hesitate.
