Pomona State Park

Having never stayed here. You really don’t know which places to stay. So if we stay somewhere, we drive around once we are settled to find the best places to camp next time. Kanza campground is probably the best. Also on Every Saturday night they have a concert. Then church on Sunday. Do they ever pack it in. Also plenty of sites that have natural shade. The real only bad thing was on the map it showed we were right across the street from a restroom. Nothing but a field. The beach was not bad. Just have to walk down a long hill. But can’t improve on that. The showers were the hottest we have experienced so far. So big fan of the showers. Plenty of great places to fish too. Unfortunately the main office was not open during the times that it was posted. Thankfully what we needed to go there for. Was not an emergency. Definitely would stay again.

A nice state park with large open grassy areas. We did a drive through several of the campgrounds. A number of the sites would work for us. Some have nice space around them with lots of grass and trees. A large dump station is available. We preferred a number of sites in the Burning Heart campground. This campground has full hook ups. The sites on the up hill side of the campground area are level and spacious.

Pomona State Park located at 22900 S. Hwy 368, Vassar, KS is on the south shore of the 4,000-acre Pomona Reservoir. The 490-acre state park has 142 campsites all with utilities, meaning water and 50 amp electric. Out of this number some also have sewer hookups. Some of the sites with utilities can be reserved, but mostly it is first-come, first-served. Being in a rural area many of the sites are shaded and have a picnic table and fire pit.

Additionally, the campground has approximately 200 primitive campsites, none of which can be reserved. There are showers and flush toilets near the campground. We always like to shower in these facilities, so we can give an honest review. I found that it took a fairly long time for the hot water to get hot in the men’s shower. Kat experienced the same conditions in the women’s showers. Initially I thought the water temperature was set low but near the end of my shower it got quite warm. The showers weren’t the most updated or cleanest we have found in campgrounds, but they did the job.

In addition, the campground offers fishing, boating, hiking, biking, swimming and picnicking. There are also three playgrounds, horseshoe pits, volleyball courts, basketball courts and a nine-hole disc golf course.

The swimming beach is open only during the summer months and there are no lifeguards. The beach is in the picnic area across the road from the Southwind Shelter House.

The Southwind Shelter House is a group facility available for picnics and other group events. It features a full kitchen, multipurpose room, porch, and restrooms.

We stayed here mid-week so the campground was quiet and not full.

Even though Pomona State Park is open year-round most of the facilities are fully functional only from April 15th to October 15th.
