Pocahontas State Park Campground

The campground is one of the oldest CC camps around. But it is huge and bicycle friendly unless you ride on the main road to the picnic and pool area. The traffic on the weekends is not only heavy but fast and inconsiderate. Dangerous. AT&T service is a spotty 1-bar 5G and at most 2-bar if you are lucky. Slow beans. Sites are numerous and pretty good. Our site #62 was near the end of our loop and we sat a bit up on a hill. Water and electricity. Plenty of sun for the solar, which we didn’t need. Hotter than the blazes. Shower rooms are situated for an easy walk, and for the most part satisfactory, though dated. Large and wide dump station on the way out. A decent state park but not as favorable as nearby more rural Powhatan. Still, we managed to visit Richmond again and the Hollywood Cemetery as well as the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

We enjoyed our stay here. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. We didn't go to the pool but it looks like an excellent place for children. The lake was teeming with wildlife and the trails were well marked/well maintained. The facilities were clean and campsites well spaced. Some campsites are unlevel and would be a challenge with an RV. We didn't have any trouble with our small TT.

I travelled here with a 35’ 5th wheel, long bed pickup and parked in the site #70, an E/W, PT site for $43/night. Roads and sites were asphalt. This site was easy to get into and was a normal pull through orientation. Some of the sites had significant slopes. Many pull through sites were on the crest of a hill so you would have to be very careful when parking to avoid a tenuous position. Most sites had ample space around and trees between them. It didn’t feel like you were close to neighbors at all. There was a large area for the picnic table and fire pit. It’s a huge campground with loads of sites that would fit any size rig. It was late in the season so the campground was pretty quiet. I had 2 bars 5G with Verizon, lots of OTA channels and no wifi. There were lots of hiking trails and playgrounds in the park which was nice. Grocery stores were only about 15 minutes away. Showers were showing rust at the bottom of wall panels but otherwise the bathhouse was clean. Cabins and buddy sites are also available if you have a group traveling together. I would stay here again.

My family of five visited this campground in our pop-up camper at the end of January 2023. This campground is one of four state parks in VA that is open year-round for camping. They have several shops/offices to buy souvenirs or camp supplies and a visitors center with programming.

During the day, it was in the mid-50s. At night, it was high-20s/low-30s. At night, we ran our furnace on low and were toasty warm in our 3-season sleeping bags.

We stayed at site 122, which was really good for families. There are trees on both sides of the site, so there is privacy on the sides. The bathhouse is on one side, and there is a little path through the trees. The site is a little larger than some of the other sites near the bathhouse, which was good for my children. There is a little hill at the back of the site and a little ditch on the front side, which acted as natural barriers to discourage my toddler from going into the street.

The campground was pretty quiet. As a family of five, we were probably the loudest ones. (Sorry!)

The playground near the bathhouse is pretty nice. There is a Gaga Ball pit there. There is another playground about 1/2 mile away via the trails.

The park itself is nice for "nature bathing" in the winter. There were a lot of hikers and bikers. During the summer, it looks like there is a cool water park.

It's about 35 minutes from Richmond, VA.

The park was easy to find. It is located about 4.5 miles west of Chesterfield on Rt 655. There is pavement all the way including in the park. Signage is adequate. Check in was efficient and friendly. The rules are fairly basic. The interior roads are paved and in good condition.

Our site, 03, was a graveled drive thru that was plenty long enough for our Coach and Towed. Services (30 amp and water only) were to the left side. Distancing is good for a rural park. All sites had a vegetation privacy barrier. Each site has a table and a fire pit and a level spot to pitch a tent on. Sadly, that was the only area that was somewhat flat on our site. We had to add blocks under our auto leveling legs to get our coach somewhat level. Both of our left side wheels were off the ground. Luckily, because the left side was raised, our entrance step (on the right side) was still easy to access. We did not see many sites that were level. Who ever designed the park had no concept of what an RV site should be like.

There is NO park included wifi or cable TV. We did not find any OTA channels. Satellite might be difficult. We did not use the washrooms or showers but we checked and found them clean.

There are trails around and within the park as well as other amenities on site but we used the park only as a base to visit attractions in Richmond..

There are no restaurants or stores within easy walking distance but just a short drive away you can find food, shopping and convenience stores. We found this park to be a fair overnighter. We paid $40.00 per night plus tax and we feel we received fair value. We will be back if in the area again but with luck we would be in a more level site.

We have stayed at Pocahontas twice now and have loved it both times. The sites are well spaced out and offer privacy thanks to the trees. The park itself offers trails, a big pool and a lake for renting canoes and kayaks. It’s also just 10 minutes away from grocery stores and restaurants if you need to pick up last-minute items and you can be in downtown Richmond in less than 45 minutes.
