We camped here in late September and had a fantastic time. The campground is popular among fisherman and jet boaters as there is a nice boat launch right there. The campground is primitive but there is a dump site and potable water (although it was off for maintenance when we were there they said it would be fixed soon, info on water status is on their USFS website) The sites had a paved pad, covered picnic table, and fire ring. They all were pretty nice and some were double wide.
The only drawback to this campground is the road in, which is quite the adventure. The road in is steep and winding, and may be challenging in bad weather. It is however nicely wide, smooth, and stable - many large trailers, boats, and school buses are able to easily make the drive while exercising caution. We saw a 45' toy hauler make it down, so it is certainly possible, regardless of how scary it looks when you're at the top of the mountain and you look at the 4 miles of switchbacks. It truly wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be, plus we dumped everything at the station before we left so we were as light as possible to go back up the hill.
The activities here aside from being on the water is the hiking. The Snake River trail is popular among backpackers as it goes the length of the canyon recreation area. We hiked it 6 miles up to Kirkwood Ranch and could not recommend the hike higher. It was incredible with a non stop onslaught of breathtaking vistas and then an adorable 100+ year old ranch for a destination.
Cell service is non existent in N. America's deepest canyon - so we enjoyed a much needed "E-Holiday".
