Itasca State Park is one of the flagship parks in Minnesota. Lots of hiking, biking, boating opportunities as well as just driving around and sightseeing. There are two campgrounds and they’re both very nice. The sites are clean and well-maintained, but most of them are very open and seem to be well-suited for large family or group gatherings to all be together. I must have driven by seven or eight different areas where a campsite had 20 chairs set up around the fire pit. Right across from me was a family occupying three sites with three campers and all kinds of fun grandkids running around. I thought it was going to be a very noisy evening and even noisier early morning but actually the campground was very quiet until about 9:30 in the morning. It’s a good mix of private type sites but a lot of them are wide-open so you can see your neighbors and your neighbors fire ring and picnic table are right outside your RV. There is lots of shade from the very mature trees, just not any privacy between most sites.
I was not at all impressed with the roads within the two campgrounds as they needed a lot of work. Potholes, pumps and areas where water has washed it away fairly badly.
Also the dump station area, for handling two campgrounds this size, should be much larger and should be able to accommodate several rigs at one time. I biked through the area at 4 o’clock on a Sunday afternoon and there were 10 rigs waiting to dump. If you do the math that means rig number 10 probably had about a 90 minute wait or longer. They should take a lesson from Peninsula State Park over in Wisconsin.

Beautiful park. We stayed at the Pine Ridge Campground and it is a bit crowded. While a few sites have some screening (like the one we lucked into due to a cancellation), many are in an open area with a few mature trees. Expect your neighbors to be in full display. The campground is well situated on a paved bike trail that is a gem. If you've got the stamina you can ride to all the sights in the park.

I stayed at the Pine Ridge Campground of this park. It is a very big campground and I wasn't in love with it. Could be due to the rain. I stayed at the Pine Ridge Campground of this park. It is a very big campground and I wasn't in love with it. Could be due to the rain. It wasn't real busy in the campground and I would definitely not like it if it was busy. I didn't get a chance to see the other campground, Bear Paw or even go hiking due to the rain. However, there appears to be a lot of hiking trails although I don't know if those are single track trails that I like or the grassy wide trails that I usually avoid. The park itself is very large with what appears to be many things to do and view.
If you are only staying for a short time, site #210e is an easy pull-thru site
I came to see the Mississippi Headwaters and so it was fine for a day.
Dump Station at Bear Paw CG.
