“Secluded site and great hiking”
Reviewed Aug 26, 2017
We arrived at Pinconning on Wednesday afternoon and had our pick of several dispersed sites, some were gravel, some concrete pad, some grass, some dirt, most all had electrical hookup and a few had water (although you may need to get out your long hose and power cord for some).
We pulled into a very private grassy spot (#49) that had electrical only and had to use some leveling blocks. There was a fire pit and picnic table with beautiful large trees all around to watch the cedar waxwings.
First thing we noticed was the train whistle in the distance, which nobody talked about. There is a friendly park ranger at the office where you can buy firewood and there is also a kayak and canoe rental opportunity.
We walked for several hours along the birding trails and boardwalks, many reaching well into Saginaw Bay. We enjoyed watching cedar waxwing, northern harrier, wood ducks, heron and egret, grebe, cardinals, robins, doves, many warblers and even saw a lonely female hummingbird. Although windy and on the cool side, we had a great time walking the trails and on a good day kayaking in the marshes would be great fun. There is a little beach with Adirondack chairs and picnic tables, perfect on a warm sunny day.
We filled up on the good water there, but be warned that the pump out station is a little “primitive.”
A beautiful spot to explore the Saginaw Bay and wildlife. The night was fairly quiet and we only heard the distant train whistle once.
We paid $25 per night, no discount unless you have a county park sticker.
