You won’t learn this in the history books, but a little known fact is that the road into this place is what gave English settlers the idea for the washboard in 1984. Coincidentally, this spot was named Best Retreat from the Heat in the Greater Grand Junction Metropolitan Area. Now that we’re done with homeschool for the day, a few notes to work on after S’mores.

1. Verizon is falling all over this mountaintop.
2. Bring your Audubon guides, as you’ll find yourself in a life sized terrarium of goodness.
3. If you pass the dirt (as opposed to road base) turnoff for this spot, it’s a steep and narrow road with only a small turnaround to set yourself back on course. “Hairy” is a good adjective for how that’ll feel.
4. While the spot itself could accommodate a larger rig, the last stretch of dirt road to get into it is a deeply rutted, no doubt soggy affair with any amount of rain, so probably best to leave the big boys at home and bring your small rig or tent for this one.
