We scouted the road out in our truck to see if we could pull our rig through (38'), and despite other comments made, we seen no issues and would've pulled our TT in if only we had a couple bars of service.
With that said, the road does become a little narrow at some parts, but there are no crazy sharp curves and the wash-board road is hardly noticeable in a big truck.

My partner and I decided to continue on with our camping trip despite the pandemic. We found this area to be our favorite of the whole trip. You are only about a 10 min drive outside of the Cañon city Walmart for quick and easy supply access. Our site was right next to the creek that runs through the park- I didn’t have any issues w/ locals or much of any traffic on the access road. Just be mindful of DEEP ruts and bumps if you plan on camper or RV camping here. We had our tent and found it to be a lovely experience.

So to make a long story short....Later, about 3 am,I stepped out to have a smoke. Moments later in the dark of the night I was sucker punched like a sledgehammer and knocked out cold. From the looks of it a few good licks were thrown in post knockout. The scenery is beautiful there. The locals are another story all together.

I finally found a decent spot just past a curve. Trash was present down a slope near my site. At @ 3:30 am a motorcycle came in at a good speed and down the road. 20 minutes later a car came speeding out of the road past me. 5 minutes later cam the motorcycle behind it. I’m thinking illegal drug activity. Since I didn’t have my firearm, we decided to leave. As I was a headed out another car came racing in past me. Lack of cell coverage makes it more concerning. I would not recommend this place for those not armed. The views are beautiful and the stars were beautiful at night.

I am very blessed to be married to an Amazing truck driver because had I been driving we probably would have died when turning around after the first tunnel but I am so glad we turned around because after the second tunnel the road narrows down to one lane only... we didn’t see any good camper spots after the first tunnel but We did enjoy driving to Victor on the second day and stopping to read about the history of the road which was a railroad that is why it’s so narrow.
I am glad we made this trip not sure if I would go back just because of being so close to the road and it being so busy.

Overall: Phantom Canyon Road is a beautiful, peaceful location, but a bear came directly into our campsite!
Directions: Very easy to find and clearly marked. There are several signs warning you not to continue on if your vehicle is longer than 25 feet. The dirt road is twisty with several washboard sections, but it's not severely rutted up. I kept it around 20 mph the whole time and was pretty shocked at how fast some people were driving. There are a lot of blind corners and narrow roads, so be careful!
Camping: We found a pull-off on the left hand side pretty soon after the second tunnel. It was a pretty deep pull-off, enough that you could see the front of our truck but not our campsite from the road. Very private and quiet! Nice and level too, with two fire pits. Super sunny and not well shaded- it was lovely in April, but I bet it gets incredibly hot in the summer. Unfortunately, there was a lot of trash when we arrived, which I did clean up. We found some bullet shells and pieces of bright orange clay, which makes me think people were shooting back there. We arrived Friday night around 6:30pm and had to drive pretty far back to find a spot, there were a lot of people camping already. I think the road went on much further too, so don't get discouraged about finding a place! As someone mentioned, there is a pit toilet, but we didn't park anywhere near enough to use it. We got NO wifi or cell service back there either (Verizon).
THE BEAR: Our campsite was backed up right next to a dried out wash. Saturday morning, we decided to explore it a little (mistake #1 - we've explored washes before but not that far into the backcountry). We didn't go back super far, just followed the rocky path. At one point we noticed A LOT, and I mean A LOT of bear scat and turned around. Our dog started barking like crazy and when we looked up, there was a giant black bear high above us on a ridge. It was turning around and clearly uninterested in us, but we hurried back to our campsite - the bear was probably less than a quarter mile away from it. A few hours later when we were hanging out at the campsite just reading (we should've left immediately), our dog started growling. We looked up and there was the bear, standing at the edge of the wash. O_O We didn't have any food or trash out (we ALWAYS keep all of that locked away in our truck unless we are actively cooking/eating). The bear wasn't acting aggressively, but it wasn't leaving either. I kept talking to it, making myself appear larger, moving slowly as we packed up and got the heck out of there (we had to take our giant awning apart while the bear watched us curiously the whole time, omg).
Just be aware if you camp here that there are bears around! Not only is it their home, but all of the trash we picked up from that campsite upon arrival makes me think that they're starting to become habituated to the area since people are so trashy (a few other reviews mention finding trash at their sites as well). I will DEFINITELY be picking up some bear spray and bringing it with me from now on. Be safe and PACK YOUR TRASH OUT!!!

This would be a really nice place to stay. The only problem was every campsite we went to was trashed. People left piles of trash.
We picked the cleanest site and picked up 2 bags of junk.
It was peaceful and loved the seclusion.
It has not rained in several months, so river is dry.

We just kept driving and ended up in this canyon, which was gorgeous. Heads up though, it was after midnight before we got to sleep, it was so hot! There were at least 3 spots down in this canyon--the road was between the tunnel and the bridge just outside the tunnel. Our Rialta struggled a bit getting back up the drive, but we made it.
No internet, some washboard roads, and tougher for bigger rigs.

The next morning we found the neighbors had 5 little dogs and 1 large one. They came from Florida and live there. Never saw the husband but the wife was very friendly. The creek was close and and the views beautiful. It was quiet and relaxing so we had coffee and breakfast from our jet boil and left. Off to hike Salida area. I would camp here again and will post the pics of the camp. There was trash around. Really wish people would haul out what the haul in. It was rough road with big holes and the road heading up had a lot of washboards. Dirt road but doable some place it was for one car only so be careful. I wouldn’t bring in a large rig over 25’ for sure. I would also unhook and look for a site first. We had cell service where we camped. Someone made a rock fire pit but we didn’t make a fire. There was access to the creek.
