“Decent Spot ”

So we appreciated the proximity to T or C and Elephant Butte. The shade was nice. Our spot was clean. We stayed 3 nights and didn’t see anything about paying? Yes, the road gets some traffic. Lots of walkers too. Locals use the dumpsters so that’s annoying, they fill right away.

Arrived on a Friday night, plenty of spots. Clean-Ish? Dumpsters were full but not overflowing, no toilet paper in vault toilets. Lots of weird vibes. Someone lit a fire and drove off, another site had a couple fighting and screaming at each other at 10:30 in the morning, and a helpful “local” drives by 2-3 times a day looking for people to chat up. Would not stay here again unless I’m looking for another eventful night. Water was low in the river, but easy access to town.

Appreciated the pull through sites and the shelters that were most likely for sun, but also worked for the steady rain. Bathrooms on site. Appears rundown but actually wasn't sketchy at all. Locals walk the trails around here and most people were friendly. Rio Grande runs through but is a trickle coming out of the reservoir.

We were checking this out. The camping spots were nice. But there is trash around. The bathrooms are out of order and locked. Mostly used for walking and riding bicycles. There is no water or electricity nearest is the State Park.

Drove through just before Halloween. It was abandoned and the river was a mud flat -it creeped us out. Yes it's free for the moment but a matter of time before the trash builds up. Just off the Hiway.

This was a really charming little campground below the Elephant Butte Dam. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 as there were game & fish employee vehicle traffic around 8:00pm and again at 7:00am. Someone told me it was because hunting season had started and they were patrolling the area. The only amenities here were a bathroom that was a distance from the individual campsites so never used it. There were no picnic tables and only 1 trash bin. Apparently the State used to run this place but turned it over to the Department of the Interior. If it weren't for the noise from the game wardens this would have been a really great place and I would have stayed more than 1 night.

Didn't stay only drove through. Only dry camping but each space has lots of room and a capital like enclosure. No tables at the individual sites.
