“Awesome views, but the no-see-ums are murder”

6 miles in from highway 89, you’ll be surrounded by majestic, striped hillsides topped with iconic red rock that Utah is known worldwide for. The colors in these striped mountains are amazing: a mix of reds, pinks, purples, blues, greens, and yellows. The views are simply stunning.

The road there is totally manageable for most vehicles. There are some sandy areas toward the end of the road, but if you’re mindful of that, you shouldn’t have an issue. At the very end (few hundred yards) the road narrows to a one lane width.

There is a pit toilet just before the end of the path, which will be to your right on the way in, and to your left is a hiking/camping/backpacking register and a few monument plaques. Parking is available on both sides of the road at this point. A bit further along is an old cemetery that’s gated off but accessible on foot.

I hiked off into the bush once we reached the end of the road and followed the river for a few miles. It’s flat, yet muddy in places. The river is only ankle deep but hard to avoid getting your feet wet. Worth the walk to get stellar photos of the surrounding landscape.

Now for the bad: there are biting insects :o(. There are gray flies (I actually don’t know what they are) the size of a common housefly, and their bite is a bitch! In addition, there are no-see-ums! These are tiny black flies that bite too. Despite their size, their bite packs a punch too. Little fuckers! These are NOT gnats; gnats are annoying too, but they don’t bite, and no-see-ums are a lot tinier than gnats, like speck tiny. Sometimes there is a pretty price to pay to be amongst the grandeur of nature.

“Amazing spot, if you have the clearance to get into it.”

There is a very nice camping spot on a rise along Paria Rd. This could be considered to be 2 spots as there is a good size open area and then another tighter area on the other side of a tree. You must go through the first area to get to the second though and only the second area has a fire pit.

The hard part is getting into this spot. Paria Road is in great shape (for a Utah backcountry dirt road) but the turn into this spot climbs a steep and rocky incline. I have a 19’ Airstream with a 3” lift kit and still dragged one corner of my bumper on the way in. I wouldn’t try to get any trailer larger than that in, besides the departure angle issue there isn’t enough room to turn anything bigger around and backing down the approach would be very rough. This would be a great spot for vans and trucks as long as they have enough clearance for that approach.

Don’t even think about going in here if it’s wet. Typical Southern Utah clay road that will turn into a wheel swallowing soup at the first hunt of moisture.
