Despite what other reviews have said, this is a paid site. Not worth the cost with other cheaper options in the area. Clean sites but a strong smell which I assume is coming from the lake.

Just a roadside stop on our way to the Inyo mountains.
We stay January 3, 2022 was very windy and cold. Snow on the surrounding Mtns and a nice sunset from the comfort of the car.

We’d stay again in the springtime. It is too hot and windy in the summer for my taste. Some sites have no trees. We had two nice shade trees in #33 but with temps in the high 90s and low 100s, the AC was going many, many hours. We’d stay again in the springtime. It is too hot and windy in the summer for my taste. Some sites have no trees. We had two nice shade trees in #33 but with temps in the high 90s and low 100s, the AC was going many, many hours. Do check the algae count if you’re planning on having a dog go in the water (see a pic of the water. I was allowed to transfer my reservation to Tillie Creek - low algae - for the remainder after talking to camp host Kim and Ranger Lee.) The evenings were really beautiful as we had a great view of the lake and the mountains plus the breeze was often balmy at that time. It is easy to get boats, kayaks, jet skis in the water.
Dump station was functional. Did not check the bathrooms. Plenty of water. Quiet during the week. The weekend people really trashed the place but they were not terribly noisy late into night. Town of Lake Isabella is not far if you have a a vehicle to use (we only had motorhome and did not break camp.) Verizon was between 2 and 4 bars.
Highway 178 from Bakersfield to this lake goes through the Kern River Canyon. It winds a lot, is one lane each way, with granite right up to the road. We did okay with our 31’ motorhome. Drive carefully.

Overall Rating
We stayed here for a few nights to escape the unrelenting wind over at the Auxillary Dam area. It was less windy, very quiet, and we had a great view of the lake. Of course, during our stay, the campground was mostly empty. With zero privacy between sites, I suspect it could be a whole different experience when busy.
