We even got a full 5g signal with AT&T in the campground - it was hit or miss in the rest of the canyon. We enjoyed the trails both in and around the canyon. We also enjoyed the blue bell ice cream at the camp store after a long day of hiking. They also had very reasonably priced gifts.
Just be aware that even in October, when the temperatures were mostly in the 70s, our trailer was full of flies from the moment we arrived. We bought 2 rolls of fly paper in the park store and they filled up overnight.

This place is amazing!! Better than the GC in my opinion. The road winds down into the canyon and there are multiple campsite loops throughout the canyon bottom. Some primitive, some electric & water, I think Mesquite fits larger rigs, while Hackberry is for around 25 ft and under. We had a semi-shady site in Hackberry that backed up to a wooded area. Site 18. It was 100 degrees in mid-Oct so morning activities only. Shower house was decent.
VERY hot when we were there Oct 8. Our 15k btu A/C ran non stop from 10 a.m to 7:00 p m. We double covered the windshield and hung insulated curtains inside over the driver area. Hike in the morning, it's just baking in the afternoon.
Zero cell phone reception.
There is a trading post store/souvenir/restaurant in the canyon bottom too.
I recommend this campground and would go back but I'd go later in Oct.

We had a great time at Campsite #89 in the Mesquite Area. Bushes and trees on both sides gave good privacy and a secluded feeling. Many trails are available for hiking with great views. Take plenty of water, it is HOT and little shade! The park has many buildings and structures built by the CCC that represent the west Texas architecture. Stop at the Visitors Center on the canyon rim for history, views and support the park at their gift shop. The proceeds roll back to the PDCSP for operating costs. Be aware of the 10% grade while driving down into the canyon. We had no trouble with our F250 and 30ft AS Globetrotter, just need to take it easy and coordinate with oncoming traffic at the tight spots. Palo Duro Canyon State Park is now one of our favorite Texas State Parks!
Use http://www.mesonet.TTU.edu - weather data - clickable observation map - PDCF Star southeast of Amarillo to get the current weather conditions on the canyon floor. It was HOT during our stay from 9/10/2021 to 9/15/202, be prepared for the heat.

Earth at its best. Historical and Amazing. Our campsite was wonderful. There are some campsites that had washouts of red earth. Very muddy for some campers. The hike to the Lighthouse is awesome but start early because the sun will get you on the way back. The last quarter mile of the hike is a climb. There are two ways of climbing to the lighthouse. We went right because we were told that was an easier climb. I reckon it was? We will have to go again and take a left to try that climb. Ours seemed a little tough though. We went to the big cave off Juniper road and it was an easy hike. The cave was amazing as well. We found another cave not on the hiking map and that one was outstanding. Very adventurous caves where we crawled though and made our way though tight squeezes. There are couple of areas that the cave opens and holes through the top of the cave allows sunlight in. The colors are remarkable. Finally you reach the top of the cave and you pop out like a prairie dog. Take a good flash light with you and a walking stick. Be careful if you walk down the hill. The ground is unstable in some areas that you might fall down into a hole and find a new cave in a bad way. I reckon that’s why it wasn’t on the trail map.

The show Texas had already closed otherwise

Texas Gem... beautiful canyon views and abundant wildlife. Similar to Cap Rock Canyons not too far away. If choosing, I would stay at Palo Duro first but both are great.

We stayed two nights and had a wonderful time. The "Texas" show which is showed every evening during the summer is a fun activity. There are many hikes in the park with excellent map instructions, lots of picnic areas.
First dump station on the way out is somewhat down sloping and therefore difficult to empty tanks, second one appeared more level.
We all enjoyed the wildlife viewing, hiking, relaxing. The scenery is beautiful!
