Going out to the west was only a short stretch of gravel and then pavement the rest of the way to hwy 97. There was a train nearby, but it was far enough away it didn't bother us. This is a very small but very uncrowded campground. There was another long time camper there, and he enjoys the place so much he asked us not to tell anyone about it, it's that nice ;-). I would plan on staying for a few nights if I returned, just to enjoy the solitude. The lake is full of lily pads, but there was excellent birding, so that was a positive thing. We camped in a 30" TT.

If you zoom in far enough on Google maps there's a section of the road called "Devil's Gate". You can't pass this section without 4wd. There is water at Shafter camp ground a few miles away though.
Unfortunately if they don't do something about the tulies this wonderful, beautiful lake is going to die and just become a bog. I remember when we were kids there used to be a sandy swimming area on the north end of the lake but not any more the reeves and tulies are over taking the lake. I wish we could get people together to keep this lake alive. The tulies will eventually choke the life out of the fish then their will not be any food for the eagles that nest their or any water for birds . The people who own the property on the south end of the lake are diverting the water so the flow to the lake isn't adequate enough to keep the tulies from growing. There was some equipment that would pull up the tulies but it was vandalized and never replaced. Love this lake Wish their was something we could do to save it.
You can get cell reception if to drive about a 1/4 mile south of the lake.

Orr Lake is a secluded lake with about 8 campsites and 3 newly built vault bathrooms. The campground has recently been expanded and improved. We didn't see an Iron Ranger and the brochure we looked at didn't say anything about paying so we assume it's free. First section has 4 campsites that small trailers can fit in. I wouldn't take anything much over 20 ft. as there is a small wooden bridge to cross and you have to weave between some trees. Once you get there the area is roomy enough to turn around and find a nice spot. If you are familiar with the area you may be able to get a larger trailer in through the back way over the railroad tracks but I'm not sure about that. Second section further around the lake is the group area with 4 more sites. The group sites are double wide and there are two bathrooms in this section.
They have added several fishing docks around the lake with a lovely path to walk on. The best part about the campground is the awesome view of Mt Shasta over the lake. We like the area for fishing and the peace and quite. There is also a resident bald eagle that flies over the lake. Every time we have been there it is either empty or one camper camping.
