If you're game for beautiful dune views, a lighthouse shining your direction every 30 seconds, and the sound of the surf (especially after traffic from NC-12 dies down), this is the place for you. If you're game for beautiful dune views, a lighthouse shining your direction every 30 seconds, and the sound of the surf (especially after traffic from NC-12 dies down), this is the place for you. There are plenty of hiking trails through/over the dunes to take you to the beach a couple hundred yards away, and nice, level spaces.
A few things to think about:
- If you're looking for shade, you won't find it here. Trees are scarce on the dunes, and non-existent in the campground. If you prefer a more private, shady setting but still a national park campground, travel an hour south to Frisco.
- If you're longer than 40' (especially TT or 5th wheel) spaces where you'll fit are few and far between. We barely fit with our 43' TH and pickup, however to park we had to back our pickup with the kingpin nearly up against the back window of the truck. Sites are narrow and you cannot park on the grass, so options are limited.

“Peaceful Beach Area”

We were there in the middle of January. It was kind of windy (20 mph), but bearable. There is electric and water hookup. Dump is across the street though. T-mobile has 3 bars, not bad. Easy walk to the beach (under 10 minutes).

We stayed here over Christmas and had a wonderful time. The location next to the beach and close to Nags Head is perfect and the entire campground is super peaceful and chill in the winter. We stayed here over Christmas and had a wonderful time. The location next to the beach and close to Nags Head is perfect and the entire campground is super peaceful and chill in the winter. It's pretty windy this time of year and we had the misfortune of being here during a severe thunderstorm with a tornado watch! Intense dumping rain and wind up to 50 mph. It was certainly an experience, but everyone came out unscathed and the campground didn't experience any ocean overwash like some spots further down on Highway 12 did. There was so much rain part of the campground flooded, and a few rigs on the inner ring had to move the next morning (keep in mind this was intense, heavy rain, definitely beyond the norm). Everyone on the outer ring stayed dry.
Despite that, we still had a great time and even though our site was relatively close to the road, I didn't notice a lot of traffic noise like others have mentioned (the wind was noisier). I also thought the sites were easy enough to back into, despite their narrowness, and the dump station at the marina across the street is very accessible (first left as you turn into the marina). Friendly and attentive staff (they knocked on our door to let us know about the tornado watch). Would definitely come back!

If you’re in a van or truck camper, go for the tent loop. Unlike the wide open grass area in the RV loops, the tent sites are divided by sloping dunes and all around a better experience. Recreation.gov indicates that the tent only sites are strictly that. The rangers told me differently, and that was a disappointment since during these times of airborne disease you have to make a reservation ahead of time, but even if it weren’t apocalypse now, the RV loops were so full we would have been out of luck. Except that the tent area had loads of space but since we had a reservation, we were locked into that with apparently no way to reverse the conundrum.
Kinda feels like they take the human out of the equation, which is precisely why I’m camping, to get away from the robot overlords controlling the doors at my local space grocery these days.
That and 10:30pm generators.
On a positive note, for you remote working types, the cell service was thicker than beach grass on a sand dune and so the Steelers did continue their undefeated streak with my eyeballs along for the ride.

I love this place. Everything is kept clean, showers are nice, and it’s an easy walk to the beach. It’s a beach campground so don’t expect trees or shade.

Electric and water only sites in Loops B & C. A beautiful park right on the beach in OBX. Site C 13 has a small trail leading to the 4X4 entrance that makes it easier to access than walking over the dunes. The beach here is amazing. Dump station across the road in the Marina was clean.

Stayed in water + electric site. Great location to explore OBX from. Big plus was the 5 minute walk to the beach when we weren't traveling to other parts of the Outer Banks. Narrow pads but plenty of space between sites. Clean facilities and staff was great. Will return.

Depending on the season, and the wind , the mosquitos can be relentless. Theres no shade, so it can be hot, and can be very windy, but its the beach, right? Some if the sites can be tough for longer RVs. We have been here several times, and always enjoy ourselves. The rangers and volunteers are always ready to answer questions and help. Three always clean bath houses and warm water showers also. Reservations are site specific thru recreation.gov

We paid $35/night and stayed a couple nights in site B39. Partial hookups (water and electric). No sewer but we used the dump station across the street at the marina on the day we left. It's a bit hard to find the dump station but just follow the signs and drive all the way to the end of the parking lot.
The sites are spaced out and plenty long even for our 42-foot rig, but you have to have at least a couple tires on the gravel and not on the grass for your truck or tow vehicle, so there's not much room for a long rig and a truck. The roads are also very narrow but we didn't have too much trouble navigating around the campground to get to our site.
The reason you come here, of course, is the beach. It's a short 5-minute walk through the dunes to the beach. There are quite a few cars that drive along the beach during the day, but in the evening we basically had the beach to ourselves. And at night we went back and caught several ghost crabs.
We could see the Bodie Island Lighthouse from our window and watched the light blinking as we fell asleep at night. Be sure to go visit the lighthouse and walk the little boardwalk.
We climbed up on our roof to watch the sunset and enjoy the views.
