Very quiet, beautiful view, we arrived late but someone in a golf cart drove around to help us find our spot and answer questions. They close the gate to get in from 10pm-6am, but you are still able to get out, you'd just have to park at the parking lot by the gate and walk to your campsite.

Being a veteran of at least 15 Corps of Engineer campgrounds, I must admit Obey River is the only one that I would not return to. The two words I would use to describe the overall campground would be "tight" and "funky." This facility was laid out in the 1940's -- according to a Ranger we spoke with -- and it shows in the sense that smaller rigs would probably be OK navigating around but larger ones must exercise a decent measure of caution. The interior roads are tight with numerous sharp curves and short, steep hills. In addition, the layout of many of the campsites makes it difficult to get into or out of and the attributes of the individual sites (size, accessibilty, views, privacy, etc.) varies a great deal. Do as much homework as you can before reserving a site here.
Having said that, the place still has many of the other endearing qualities expected at a COE campground. A great price, large, mostly level sites -- although some may be difficult to maneuver into or out of either due to how the site sits in relation to the road, and/or an incline going into/out of the site. There are many great sites right on the Lake with beautiful views. Our site -- #128 -- was a pull thru with a huge sitting area and a slice of a water view from the rear of the campground. We probably would have liked it better if not for a family group with about 15 kids occupying the three sites immediately around us. It was a noisy weekend!
One huge bonus here, which we have NEVER seen anywhere else are the washers and dryers which are FREE(!!!) to use. There is one washer and one dryer outside two of the bath houses. As full timers, we took full advantage of this extraordinary find.

It's a clean, well spaced campground operated by the Corps of Engineers which makes it quite a bargain with your America the Beautiful card. And despite marking No above, I would visit this campground again on one, and only one condition:
They should hire a new camp hostess.
Lisa H. must have failed her police academy physical (or maybe the psychological test) because she has a huge case of policewoman's envy. She is not helpful with useful things such as changing sites on Mondays ("We can't do anything with this computer system. You have to call Rec.Gov." Rec.gov told us "She is the one who's supposed to change campsites -- she's there, and we're not." We explained that she wouldn't help us, so Rec.gov got us changed. When came by to get a new site number hang-tag, was she ever stunned.
What she is good for though, is stopping her golf cart by your picnic table to ask "Is that alky-hol? I do hope not! You'll go to jail for that." And later "Is that firewood certified bug-free?"
Her old man puts up with it, so he's gotta go too.

They have signs requiring heat treated wood to be used at campsites.
