When I came across this group of five campgrounds above Lake Pillsbury, I decided to check them out as a quick two or three day off grid get-away.
Oak Flat Campground is the only one that has not been paved. The sites are large and easy to access. Units larger than my 29 footer will fit easily on any site. The pit toilets are clean and evenly spread around the campground. Fresh spring water can be had beside each toilet unit. If you want to fill your water tank with a hose, you’ll need a water bandit, the spigots are not threaded. No dump or electricity nor Cell service of any kind. The lake water is about a half mile walk from the shore. I didn’t get the impression from the Host that it was any higher this last spring. He said that they were busy on the Holiday weekends, but other than that, it's been a lonely summer. We were the only ones there.
Now the down side, once you leave CA-20 you have about 15 miles of paved road until you get to gravel. A good portion of this paved road has been patched and repatched so many times that it's almost a sin to call it paved. Once you reach gravel, the road is literally cut out of the side of the mountain. It’s all up and down hill, twisty, curvy and a few gnarly switchbacks thrown in to boot. Because of the complaints from my cat about the rough ride and my wife saying that her b**bs hurt from all the bouncing, I took it easy coming back out. About 45 minutes going in and an hour & half coming out. And that was only 11 miles of gravel road. After that, the last 4 miles were paved at the same time they did the campgrounds. This is a destination campground, not a one or two night enroute camp site.
The two campgrounds that I did not check out were Pogie Point Campground and Fuller Grove PG&E Campground. I was told by the host that I talked with, that they were good for tents only because of the tightness of the curves going down the mountain side into them. From what I could see from the entrance, I agree with him.
Ernie & Adel would stay here again

So, after a struggle trying to get to Oak Flat Campground. By the way, Ukiah way is closed 11 miles from Lake Pillsbury. That will teach me not to call the ranger station first. You have to take the 301 through the Upper Lake Ranger Station. I show up at the campground a day late and what do I find. The Police, everywhere! They were having some outing together and they even had a helicopter. I traveled through the little campground and took a couple of pictures and said off to Letts Lake. The last thing I wanted to do was camp with a bunch of off duty officers of the law.. *rolls eyes*
Oh, on the way to camp. I saw a ton of deer just sitting around. I was so amazed. I took pictures.
I checked my phone.. .Project Fi.. It was useless as usual. I had nothing.
