Grapevine Campground

This is a great place if you are a fisherman as Tomp has stated. If you aren't, there isn't much to do as in town there are at least 5 outfitters or fly shops and that is about it. I still had a great time watching the birds and Q-dog got to swim although the water in Mid-May was probably about 45 degrees (based upon my unsophisticated techniques as seeing how long I could keep my hand in the water). The water levels have been pretty low so you likely won't have to worry about the 15 feet water sign but I would at least check with rangers beforehand especially in the spring during snow melt. You may find this campground very full with fisherman. If you are not a fisherman, you may not find this very enjoyable unless it is fairly empty in which case you should see birds, bears and perhaps other wildlife.

Internet was an extended 3G and very slow.

I stayed at the North side which provided (if I can actually say this), "better spacing" than the south side, but there are no trees or shading. Also the north side is better for solar as the south side has a median of trees which will hit the back side of your trailer. Based upon my impressions of driving thru the south campground, very tight spaces (shady though), but again if you are fishing and just looking for a place to park the trailer, no problem. Vault toilets clean.

Nice boondocking on asphalt. Mainly fly fishermen here parked side by side. Quiet by day as they are fishing. Social dinner hour then quiet as they get their fishing sleep. Occasional black bear visitor, sometime rattlers on the tarmac, fox and coyote visit as there are lots of wild pheasant and Hungarian partridge wandering around.

Ft. Smith isn't much more than commercial sport fly fishing, guiding and supply depot. The Ft. is worth a quick look, a drive up to the dam is interesting as well. Surrounding area is historically interesting by visiting the Little Big Horn, drive through the reservations, explore the north end of Big Horn Canyon with 4WD, boat or horseback. This is a very old and historic area divided N/S by the River Cnyon and Bad Pass Trail dating back to wearly huminoids in the area.

If you are trout fisherman, you have just found heaven. This is a real BLUE RIBBON stream with plenty of walkble access points once you get near the river. IF YOU HAVE COME THIS FAR, DON'T PASS UP THE FISHING. You can rent anything you need to catch fish, and then some!
