North Fork Big Wood River

We came here second week of May just after the rangers opened FR-146.
We travelled all the way to the end where there is a trailer turn-around.
All sites looked nice and we counted 12 dispersed sites, #1 was the furthest in. We ended up in 2C(the furthest in of three sites of area #2.
The site was next to the river. It was 4.5 miles in on the dirt road and our closest neighbor was back up the road 3.5 miles in camp Murdock.
The only animals we saw were ground squirrels.
It was so peaceful and a wonderful experience.

Loved this campsite! Favorite of the trip by far, should have stayed longer. This is sort of dispersed camping, but not really as sites are now numbered and you can’t camp outside of a designated spot. There are only 14 sites on this road (146) and it’s a popular spot, so be warned. We arrived on a Wednesday and got really lucky, only two spots were still open. We had neighbors to each side of us, but they were spaced quite a distance, and also not home (?) so we saw nobody.
Had one bar of ATT service, amplified it with the WeBoost. Saw mule deer and the dogs loved having the river nearby. The road was fine for our 14’ trailer. Appreciated the fresh water/dump/trash station which we used on the way out.

This has been our favorite campsite in Idaho. The numbered sites are spaced out so that you can’t see your neighbors, and it truly feels like you have the place to yourself! Most of the sites are very spacious and they all have access to the river. Lots of wildlife too! We saw plenty of deer and even a few foxes! Plenty of sun for solar, while still having shaded areas to relax under. The forest road is very rocky, but any size rig should be fine. Our 30ft travel trailer made it no problem. Very little cell phone service.

Boondocking in Idaho is a dream! There were lots of spots here to choose from, some accesses were more sketchy than others but after a little searching we found a quiet, flat spot in the woods to do some repairs on our vehicle.

Hardly any other vehicles pulled by. We could hear the river but not see it. Highway noise during the day but pretty quiet at night. Only animal/human encounters were a couple of curious raccoons that were rather cute. Easy to run to Ketchum for socializing or Hailey for auto parts store.

Many other campgrounds close by charging $16/night-why?

We were here mid July attempting to get into the same site that Grand Adventure stayed in - saw how beautiful it was on YouTube - but alas we were too big so were blessed to find another site on the same road - the road is not maintained like in some national forests and recreation areas but we were able to go in and out though had to drive very slowly in some areas - enjoyed listening to the rushing water of the creek and hiking - drove into Ketchum and had lunch - a very nice place for a few days but if were in this area again we would try one of the other locations for variety - had gorgeous weather and having a dump so close was a plus

We stayed 3 nights dry camping in a beautiful site along Forest Rd 146. We stayed exactly 2.8 miles from turnoff of Hwy 75 and/or 2.0 miles from the NRA dump station the site was on the right. There were only two downsides to this site and that was the road conditions (very bumpy!) not that it can't be done because we did but I would not suggest going to much further unless you have lots of clearance. The other thing was moths! Like attack of the moths! I am not sure if it was the time of the year or the trees or what, but geez... There was some traffic but the site was a ways off the road and didn't bother us at all. Also, the road made people slow down so dust was not an issue. Just up the road is several sites near a restroom section if needed. Our site had 360 views and was just beautiful to see everyday. We didn't see the river, but could definitely hear it. Our site was large and fairly level. Our first day we did get notified of a bear 1/4 mile from our site, so something to be aware of camping. We did venture just with the car up to the end of 146 and there are some beautiful sites up that way but again not for low clearance trailers. We may stay here again, but have found lots of other sites around the area a little less bumpy of road conditions.
The site is just north of Ketchum with lots to do, however if you are needing things from Walmart think again...that's back in Twin Falls. They have a small grocery store, Chateau Drug (which everyone refers you to for some reason), and Backwoods.

The GPS coordinates for this site are way up the road but the sites actually start very close to 75. The previous review summed it up well- easy access just off of SR75 with a dump station, water and visitor center right at the start of 146. The road turns to gravel at the dump station but its a good road as far as we went. Beautiful views of the mountains on either side of valley, great level sites with fire rings that start right after the dump station. We stayed in the first site so we barely had to drive down any gravel to get there and great cell service! 3 bars of LTE with Verizon and ATT.
