We moved our 27ft 5th wheel here from the unsuccessful Lower Salt Creek CG a mile away. Luckily it was empty so we snagged nice Site #4 in the vehicle parking area with view across lake (and saw 2 bald eagles perched in a tree opposite). All camping fees seem to have increased around here: I suspect They have farmed out the job of fee-collecting to a 3rd rate ‘ex-security guard’ outfit who probably upped the fees to make more profit: One came at 2pm on our 3rd day in a vehicle with ‘Shasta Recreation’ logo, complained about where we were parked, beside a big sign saying “parking for Camp Site Users”, which is what we were, and right beside the #4 site marker - he wasn’t able to figure out where else we were supposed to be camped for the spot! Then he complained we didn’t have enough cash in the envelope – it had the correct $6, and we had already explained we had a Senior Pass. It seemed all he cared about was making as much money as possible - and, we wondered if it would go to where it was supposed to… Note too there was NO fee-payments pillar here – he said someone stole it 2 years ago! Yet they have no signs suggesting how to pay (we honestly paid 2 nights via the pillar at Lower Salt Creek CG, while suspecting most others don’t bother).
On a short walk along nearby roads to a Day Use car park, we found 2 people in a car with 2 large unruly barking dogs running loose, they said their battery was dead, but we were not able to help. Their windscreen was totally smashed. We felt uneasy about those people. There was an abandoned car along another lane. So sadly the area can appear a bit dodgy… We used it as a base to visit Shasta Lake Caverns.
Poor cell signal.
