“A Gem for high clearance rigs”

For those with true high clearance rigs, this is the road for you. The last two sites, approximately 1 mile from the Rabbit Ears Trailhead, have the most coveted views on the pass. You will have secluded views of the Rabbit Ears and the surrounding wildflower filled valley leading to them.
The trailhead parking lot is a pot-holed mess. There is not a good entry into the area and cars struggle to move around. It needs to be regraded considering the popularity of the area, but for now I would only approach with good clearance and suspension. The parking lot is a "no camping zone" and this zone is clearly signed as it continues up FR 311.
Passing the parking lot you will enter some thick trees, this is the second part that will remove any tall rigs from entering the area. The trees are on the edge of the road and have many low hanging branches, eliminating any 5th wheels and many Class Cs from continuing. This area also has many ruts and humps and is the the worst section of road. If you can pass this section you are in the clear to the best sites.
The road makes a sharp uphill turn to the east at the first two sites. These sites have views of the Dumont Lake valley. They are at a slight slant and offer the first opportunity to turn around. One site is shaded and the other full sun.
Continuing up the road there is a site on the left deep in the trees. This is a secluded site and also at a slight angle. It is fairly large and most rigs could turn in this site.
Then on the right you reach the two golden sites! They are off the road on two track spurs and offer the best views you will see in the area. They are spaced apart enough that you will not notice someone in the other spot. These are prime locations so get there early if you want to snag one. I have seen vans, truck campers and airstreams in these beautiful locations.
Passing these campsites is not advised due to a LARGE hole in the road about 1/4 a mile past. There is no turn around past these sites.
We had 2 bars of AT&T 4G and 1 bar of Verizon 4G, but both would drop in and out depending on the terrain.
Loving Every Mile would stay here again
