We stayed for almost two weeks because the price was right, the weather was nice, and the cell service was good enough for a couple of techno nomads. There are some beautiful hikes down to both the Rio Grande and the Red River. Also the monument is close enough to Taos and Red River that we could go for grocery’s and dump waste and to hike some great mountain trails. Also the water was better tasting then any campground we have stayed at.

Location is amazing and super quiet! Restroom was the cleanest I've seen in a park.
Looking forward to coming back for more than 1 night!!

Stayed the last week of April. There are 4 total camping spots here, 2 of which are suitable for an RV. Stayed the last week of April. There are 4 total camping spots here, 2 of which are suitable for an RV. We stayed in #16, the first one as you enter the campground, and our 25' trailer + crew cab truck fit in single file. You could get a longer trailer in if the tow vehicle parked at an angle. The other RV spot (#17) has a pretty wide parking pad, and you could park the tow vehicle alongside the trailer, so would accommodate a longer trailer. This spot is also closer to the gorge rim. 17 has a bit more privacy from 16, but the fire pits are visible to one another, though a decent distance apart.
We checked in at the visitor center upon arrival, and learned that a few spigot pipes had frozen over the winter, and that water was available at specific camps, but not all. We went to La Junta campground for water. All campgrounds had a dumpster. Recycling for glass, aluminum and plastic bottles at visitors station. No dump station or hookups.
The entire Rio Grande del Norte National Monument is very well taken care of, and it was a pleasure to camp here. Montoso campground is very quiet. The vault toilet here had nice quotes taped to the wall (complements of artists who stay here in the summer), and was very clean and well stocked. We saw it serviced twice while camping here. Verizon cellular was enough to get text emails and basic web, but no streaming or larger data files (large photos uploaded)
The hiking is great here. There is a loop trail that connects all the campgrounds and is a wonderful easy walk that takes you through pinon and juniper forest. Many deer and birds while we were there. We found this to be a great after dinner walk from Montoso down to La Junta, which overlooks the confluence of the Red and Rio Grande rivers. The hiking down in the canyon is really special. There are many primitive campsites down by the river, each with a shelter, fire ring and picnic table, don't know if permit is needed for these. We hiked 4 days here, from down to the rivers to up Guadalupe Mountain, and a lot in between.
The campgrounds are a good 20 minutes from the main road (522), so it's not a quick jump into Questa if supplies are needed. Bring what you need. The visitors center said that while overall the area is not overly crowded, there tends to be more people in the fall, when the local National Forest campgrounds have closed. This, and the other camps in the Monument, are open year round.

Water and vault toilets.
All of the campsites here are on the ledge with beautiful views.
My only complain about this Monument is the lack of shade at most of the campsites. The trees here are not tall as in other forested areas so be prepared for warm days. But the nights definitely cool down.
