The bathrooms are well stocked and clean. The garbage cans are emptied often. I’ve never seen any of the sites left with a mess. Park ranges do make occasional stops. There is no electrical hookup or random access on the state park side.
It’s a quick under-road tunnel walk over to the other Montana Creek Campground. There is a small store there where you check in. They have firewood, food, clothing, bug spray, fishing licenses and resources.
You absolutely need bug spray. Mosquitos throw regular raves. |m|
Short drive to downtown Talkeetna, cafes, drive through coffee snacks, and a grocery store called Cubby’s which has fresh food and small amounts of camping stuff in case your tent breaks or you forgot that can of beans.
You’ll hear the road and trains. If your neighbors are “fun” there’s no escaping the noise.
4 stars because the spaces are small and snug. It met the rest of my needs.

It really baffles the mind because it’s state land and it’s on the river so why they couldn’t expand and put some sites along the river and some sites carved into the woods is beyond me. 🤷♀️ So far, very disappointed with AK State Parks.

Apparently this site is managed by the folks across the highway at Montana Creek Campground and accepts reservations. There is a tunnel under the highway for pedestrians.
Its a dirt loop parking lot with side by side camping. The sites are two "lanes" but one lane contains the picnic table and fire pit. There are trails to the river, day use parking for a fee, clean pit toilets, trash. You will hear the highway (at the moment they are doing road construction and installing a new bridge) and the train. Self pay with a check out of 6:00 PM.
