On our previous stay we rented discs and slid down the dunes- lots of fun!

NOTE: every other site has a covered picnic table on a cement floor. The wasn't much room to park our truck. We had satellite with Dish but only 1 bar with Verizon but did a little better with our WeBoost. I didn't find the staff in the visitor center to be terribly friendly. Pro: you can walk anywhere you want around the dunes which was great. I wouldn't return to this area. There is absolutely nothing in the town of Monahans.

We stayed for a few nights and enjoyed ourselves. Plan for everything to be covered in sand by the time you leave including you and the outside of your entire camper. We got caught in a sand storm one night and it truly got sand everywhere. Definitely recommend an air compressor to blow off your slides. Great showers to clean off with though with plenty of hot water and great water pressure. They were relatively clean as well.
The Junior ranger program was a bit lacking. They said they might get their own books in the future but that for the time being, they have the same books as other Texas State Parks without a book of their own.
We had a great time hiking the sand dunes with our golden retriever. Just stay out of the vegetation on the dunes and you should be able to avoid most of the little stickers that get stuck in their paws.
Overall, great stay and would recommend!

Monahans Sandhills is a beautiful state park right off the highway. We had a reservation for 2 nights but arrived early and stayed in the Primitive Overflow picnic area. The site required you to be self contained. The spot was beautiful and private. Unfortunately a few minutes into setting up our dog had collected several goat heads (not the correct name, but similar annoyance). We removed them and put on her booties for a walk. This definitely was not a solution - see picture. Ultimately, we canceled the next two days and hit the road. The park is beautiful but not for dogs.

However, $15 for electric and water, plus beautiful sand dunes...I'll take it.

The sites are right in the middle of sandhills so you just walk out to sandhill. The park is not big but not that small either. We enjoyed the park and the camp alot. Go out during sunset and enjoy the beautiful sight over the sandhills.

We stopped here for the night in our way west and really enjoyed the sites. The Sandhills are right outside your site. The sunset was gorgeous. I only wish the weather was warmer and less windy. Site 9 was nice - pull through. The sites were fairly close but not too bad. Water and electric were fine.

Site 1 was conveniently located near bathrooms, pretty level, everything was good.
Our Verizon hot spot with the booster barely got any signal, I think it was 15 mbps down at night and crawled during the day. Enough to stream at night and work during the day but only if the booster was pointed in a certain direction and not touched.
T-mobile had one bar, couldn’t FaceTime, could make a call, could not watch videos, barely able to get on social media or pull up a website.
I noticed the following about the other sites (the pull throughs only): sites 2-4 are not very level. Sites 8-9 are very level and right next to the Sandhills.
We are a 32’ class C pulling a 20’ flatbed with our car on it, so 52’ total and had no problems fitting in site 1.
