Popular State Park with the locals with docks and place for boat trailer parking. A 2 mile trail to Hemlock Falls and a 1 mile nature trail sums up the activities here. Sites level and crowded. Laundry available. Park supplied wifi 3 bars.

Nice, small state park. Sites were a little small but not too bad. This is a great place to stay and be close to lots of things to do. We were able to visit 3 other parks within a 30 min or so drive.

Smell in March didn’t notice it, but summer might be a problem. The sites around us too close we prefer more separation, and more trees.
Site 2 is best if you want a little privacy. It’s a pull thru and your outside set up faces the creek. Trout construction noises during the week continues. We were in a Entegra Odyssey-32ft Class C. 3 adults camping.

This a great state park campground right on Lake Burton. To get there, you are on some windy roads and the entrance can sneak up on you as it sits in a curve.
The park is pretty much the campground. There is a playground, boat launch, canoe rentals, pavilion, pier and picnic area at lake end.
The campground is small, which is fine with us. As with any campground, there are preferred sites. In actuality, most all the sites here are fine. Just make sure your outfit will fit the spot. Most of the sites have nice sized outdoor areas. You are not on top of your neighbor.
Our site required some distance backing and turning to get situated. Because of a concern we had about the step down coming out of the trailer, we wound up further forward than we would have liked which created a slope for hitching/un-hitching.
The campground is adjacent to a trout hatchery. A new one was under construction during our visit, but that was only during the day.
There is are 2 hikes you can access from the campground. A nature walk and a hike up to some falls. The latter hike, the trail can be a bit sloppy. But, the hike along the creek to the falls is nice.
The bathhouse and park are clean. They did have an issue with a shower head in the ladies side being super jet powered and creating a mess during our stay.

Checking in was easy and the loop is easy to maneuver with our motorhome. Our site was technically a pull through, so getting in was easy. The sites are roomy and very clean, one of the cleanest state parks we have stayed in. The volunteers seemed to always be busy cleaning and picking up.
There isn’t much here, unless you fish and boat, but it’s a lovely little park. As of Nov. 2020 the fish hatchery is still closed. We walked across the street and up to Hemlock Falls. Some storms had come through and there were several trees blocking the trail, some you had to go u see, others over. The small bridge was missing a couple of boards and the handrail was missing (actually, it was pushed over, but we didn’t see it until we headed back). Still, a nice hike from the campground.
We came from the Clayton area and the road down to the park is a little windy, but we made it.
Everyone was very nice and we enjoyed our short stay here.

Cell coverage is spotty, but the Internet has been upgraded and is excellent for streaming or using WhatsApp for calls. Visit O'Sage Farms for fresh veggies and the Cupboard Cafe for a great lunch in nearby Clayton.

We were fortunate enough to get Site #18 which was pretty close to Lake Burton. Wow. All this for less than $35 a night? You've got to be kidding. Check in was interesting as I was next in line behind a camper who knew his fishing questions. He asked about things I never heard of and the park attendant answered every one of his questions courteously and fully, like she was talking to a friend. I learned a little about the dining preferences of several species of fish in the area and about fishing licenses while waiting. I learned most of all from the very beginning that this lifestyle is more chill than I'm used to and there will be a learning curve. [Slow down, breathe in, breathe out, repeat, and relax...]
After getting all the check in duties done we had a bit of rain from the outermost tip of Hurricane Matthew. It was still marvelous. Something like that would keep me inside all day at home, but for some reason while camping it's what spurred me on to take a walk with an umbrella.
We packed a lot of food for the trip. I don't know why. The weight of it actually made me concerned about hauling the camper, but we were fine. I guess I never really had to tote seven meals with cooking supplies in my arms to the camper before so I didn't have an idea of the poundage involved. All I can say is that I'm thankful for the camper, the strong enough truck, and that I'm not packing for feeding all of us from backpacks. (Click on the highlighted word above for our menu plans.)
Directly next to the park is the Lake Burton Fish Hatchery. That was surprisingly interesting. Dogs are not allowed so don't bring Fido. Across the street from the park's entrance is a trail up to Hemlock Falls. It was worth the time and effort, although we did wind up walking farther than we expected. User error. You can drive to the trailhead instead, which we did not do. I think it was more of a 4 mile hike the way we did it. No worries. I told you I brought plenty of food.
For an excursion we drove about 30 minutes away to Helen, a town known for it's German village appearance. That was particularly fun since it was Oktoberfest. We ate brats in the Biergarten. Our dog was able to eat under the fest tent with us, receiving a bowl of water and a doggie biscuit from the waiter. It was a lot of fun and a beautiful day.

Wife and I headed to the mountains to do some trout fishing. This place was perfect for a weekend get away. The site we stayed on had plenty of space.
