Road was gravel and pretty level except for a few pot holes along the way but doable.
We had a front lake view and it was beautiful. There is a dumpster and bathroom nearby.
It could be noisy at times, more people come on the weekend.
Max stay is 10 days per calendar year.
February was pretty cold at night around 45ish in the evening and high of 70ish.
Some days can be really windy...15 to 20 mph and most days are calm.
Everything is within 30min drive to...grocery, library, gas, restaurants, usps post office, laundry, etc.

There were some beautiful sites all along the way and it was so quiet. We had just come from San Diego. During the day it was sunny, warm and beautiful. As soon as dusk hit the mosquitoes were so bad we had to go in. The road is dirt and dusty. Saturday there were ATV's riding back and forth and kicked up a lot of dust. There was absolutely no cell phone or wi-fi service. We have T-mobile.

There are three large areas to park large rig rvs and numerous smaller remote camping areas. AT&T services is non existant. Road is solid hard packed gravel and sites are hard packed gravel. Road can be very dusty. Attempted biking road but to dusty for our liking. Some hiking trails and lots of atv activity.

They had created a larger parking lot for RV use near the main boat ramp, but it was just a gravel parking lot. Not our ideal location. We continued past the main boat ramp on a dirt road heading north toward the Yuma proving grounds. There were several great camping spots further up the road, all of which had great views. We finally reach a smaller boat ramp and fishing dock with parking available right on the water. It was beautiful.
We did have a tone of bugs (we were there around April 1st so this may be seasonal). A rattle snake approached us on the water while our 4 year old boy was wading in. We decided to stop swimming there at that time.

Checked with local BLM office on how to get to property. Unpaved road 1/2 mi. before the lake. No overnight parking at most of the jettys near the lake. There is a designated camping area opposite of the 2 dumpsters and catty corner to the picnicking/boat launch area (all designated camping sites are back in.) Above the boat launch is parking and restrooms (vault toilets.)
If you continue past the boat launch, there is probably just one campsite and probably one of the few turn-around areas for larger trailers.
There is an upper level -- which is just about 1/2 way after Betty's Kitchen and before the boat launch. You don't have any jetty access, but you do have access to a waterway. There are several areas to camp. Suggest you scout out the areas of interest. Most spots are pretty level. Be aware that on the weekends, some people populate the area to shoot their firearms. It's not near any campsite, but you can hear the live fire. Not sure if this is legal on BLM land.
We managed to snag a spot with waterfront views on the upper level. Very quiet up top during the week. Observed that the jetty-side camping areas could get noisy with all of the ATVs and anglers' trucks with boats traveling back and forth.
There are mosquitos in the area. However, the presence of mosquitos are more prevalent lake front and jetty. Upper level has some mosquitos, but it's a lot more manageable.
Max stay is 10 days per calendar year. It is a great place to "unplug" from an internet and cellular driven world. If you get spooked by hearing live fire from various firearms, bet to stay during the weekday.
Overall, a nice place to stay, but will limit it during the weekdays.

Once there we drove past the picnicing crowd and fishing folks. We then checked out the boat parking and toilets, but continued north to a blocked dirt road on the left. We chose the other end of that blocked road which had huge boulders to prevent UTVs from driving through.
After setting up we hiked around the area and enjoyed the views of the lake and water fowl.
As the sun went down it the gnats and skeeters came out. More gnats than skeeters, thankfully.
No one bothered us through the night. No loud parties or noises. And were surprised at how many neighbors we had at sunrise.
In all the site we chose was flat, cleanish, and void of problems. I would recommend this to any tent, campers or large RVs.

We stayed at the second launch which had a fishing dock. We had 2 kayaks and a paddle board. Went out 3 days. Busier on the weekend with boats and fishermen. Everyone very accommodating. Slow fishing due to the previous cold winter and water but getting warmer the day we left.
Only one outhouse and trash near the day use area. Nice hike above parking area where outhouse was located. Dirt road some dust. Lots of planes flying over.
Recent fire burned some brush along one waterway. Easy access to Yuma
Lots of small bugs but not mosquitoes last night as temperatures were heating up.

There are some really cute sites along the lake if you are lucky to snatch one! We continued a little further on the road and finally found an empty one (with lots of trash, but we cleaned it up and set up camp)... but soon discovered how crazy the bugs were. By then, they were everywhere in the bus too. They are small mosquitoes and were coming in through our screens. We spent littlerally an hour trying to kill them all while stuck inside because it was impossible to be outside. And you know, we are Canadians, we know mosquitoes!
We left as soon as possible the next morning. There are probably times of year where it's better, but by late January, it was awful.
Also, be careful since some people with pickups drive really fast on that road.

i know this is out dated, but i just discovered this excellent website,(thanks, great job).
actually, i will stay at mittry lake again, though not sure if my wife will -- i won't stay at betty's kitchen again after what happened, as follows:
it was about 1 yr ago -- we have been staying in the same spot for years, whenever we're in algodones for glasses, dental, etc., its the first left(betty's kitchen) coming from the south, and the first little pull-off by the small dam(i used to like sleeping with the sound of the water, plus always some herons hanging out) -- anyway, about midnite, sound asleep, hear a car stop, door slam, then"no, no, don't shoot me!" and about 3 shots from a pistol, car speeds away -- i guess it was someone's idea of a prank, cause i looked in the yuma paper for a couple weeks, no reports of a murder there.
we're not into generators, or loud music, so we always have boondocked away from other rigs, but next time i stay at mittry lake, guess i'll need to take my chances with the generators, and not take as isolated a spot
