We stayed here for five nights using it as our base camp to explore the Seney National Wildlife Refuge and paddle the Manistique River. There is a boat ramp river access at the campground so one of our paddle trips we ended right there at the campground. There are at least two outfitters in the nearby town of Germfask. Site number one right on the river was a gem. There are four sites right on the river bank. The remaining sites are in a loop higher up on a bluff. We had the entire campground to ourselves the whole time…well except for the mosquitoes and deer flies and stable flies. I guess we didn’t get the memo about camping there in late June early July.
Like most if not all Michigan State Forest Campgrounds, the nightly fee is $20 and a DNR passport is required. The vault toilet for the campground was very clean. Water quality was good in the hand pumped well.
The campground is located 5 miles off of M77. Four of those 5 miles are gravel/sand. It rained while we were there and it got quite muddy. Still easily drivable, just a trip to the car wash afterwards.
Highly recommend the wildlife refuge for multiple visits. We rode our bikes for on more than 30 miles of trails hiked some and there is one driving loop that you can also do. Saw loons, sandhill cranes, trumpeter swans, Canada geese, ruffed grouse, bald eagles, ospreys and a variety of other woodland birds.
Jonathan would stay here again
