We always select a site in the Cedar Sage loop as these are all 50 amp.
The facilities have always clean and well maintained.
There are a couple of swimming holes on Onion Creek that are perfect for a cool dip on a hot afternoon. A paved hiking trail circles the park and is ideal for an evening stroll through the woods.
The bad points, very rough roads and the ever present city noise.
I have posted several videos of this wonderful park on my YouTube Channel and they can be seen here...

The only thing I didn't like was the position of our Airstream in conjunction with the sun. At this particular site, the street side of the Airstream never escapes the sun.
I was pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness of the nearby facilities. The bathhouse and the restrooms were well maintained. I do wish the non-handicapped shower had a shelf for your things but nothing deal-breaking.
The falls are beautiful and were flowing heavily on our stay. The water was nice and chilly which felt good on my feet after a nice hike. The trails are nice and there were bluebonnets all around. There seemed to always be a nice breeze that helped with the heat in the afternoon.
There is some road noise, but it can easily be drowned out by all the birds singing! It's very quiet at night and super dark! A fair amount of stars were out on our stay.
We will certainly add this to our list of favorite state parks!

If you're looking to stay in the Austin area with quick access to the city without feeling like you're in the city, this is the spot. While it's only a few miles off of a main highway, once you enter the park, you feel like you're nowhere near an urban area. Everything from the front entrance sign to the roads and bathrooms is immaculate. The staff is also very friendly and helpful. There are numerous hiking trails throughout the park, including several that lead down to the falls and swimming areas. I imagine the park gets very busy during warmer summer months, but at the end of January it was quiet and we only saw a few other hikers while walking about.
This place is a total gem and we will definitely stay here again while visiting Austin.

Urban RV camping can be a disappointing experience. Crowded sites, parking lot aesthetics, bright lighting, and really, all of the things that can ruin a sense of home. Thankfully, when visiting Austin, you have another option with McKinney Falls State Park. Only ten miles from downtown Austin, this relatively spacious park makes for a perfect home base when visiting the city of weird.
The spots are absolutely enormous with wooded separation between each site and plenty of land to spread out and enjoy the evenings. The sites come with a picnic table, fire ring with grate and a lantern pole. The sites are relatively level and paved. All sites have water and electric connections, but no sewer connections. However, the dump station is large and convenient.
The bathroom facilities are little worn with frequent use. However, they are kept relatively clean considering the amount of traffic. Water pressure is adequate with good access to warm water.
The park provides a large number of extremely beautiful hiking trails with ample wildlife spotting opportunities. I don’t think I’ve ever encountered as many deer in one park as I have here, including several bucks. Plenty of birds are also to be found. One night along the river banks, I came across a huge colony of roosting egrets. Quite a sight. The falls themselves are also quite pretty, I personally liked the upper falls the best.
Now for the downside, although this isn't really something the park can do much to correct. First, you are in Austin, a college town. You should expect to get some people looking to party in the campsites during the weekends. We did on both weekends we were there. However, during the week the park really empties out and you really get a sense of refuge from the bustling city near by. Secondly, during the days on the weekends, the park is quite popular with locals. This can lead to long lines at the park entrance. They often times will wave people with entrance passes around the line, but not always.
One last note, the gates to the park are locked every night at 10:00 PM. However, they will give you the code to the gate if you want to return after hours. It changes weekly, but a park ranger will bring you the new code on the day of the change.

A beautiful state park with large semi-private sites, nice trails, and close to "civilization". We stayed for two weeks (you'll have to make reservations early, as the park fills up on weekends) and enjoyed the park. Since the park entry fee is $6 per person per day, we purchased the $70 TX annual parks pass, which also included 50% off one night of our stay ($12 off). We stayed in the 50-amp loop which only has around 10 sites; the rest of the campground is 30-amp only. You choose your site when you arrive (when we checked in they suggested a site for us, but we ended up choosing a different one). Most sites (pull-throughs and back-ins) look like they could handle big rigs, but sites are not level at all and could be a challenge for longer rigs. Our site had great privacy but we needed lots of leveling blocks under our back wheels and jacks. The various campground loops are big enough for enjoyable dog walks, plus there are many trails around the campground and the rest of the park. Upper Falls is easy to get to via a paved trail, but dogs aren't allowed in the water. However several of the longer hiking trails require crossing the river at Lower Falls, so getting wet there is unavoidable (bring water shoes or extra socks). Our only complaint about the park is that the water at the showers was luke warm at best, but more often was uncomfortably cool. We gave up and took navy showers in our rig instead and visited the dump station halfway through our stay. While the park is close to lots of stores and restaurants, the park entrance is on the far side, so it does take 10-15 minutes to get anywhere, exiting the park and then driving all the way around it. AT&T and Verizon both worked very well. We loved the seclusion and natural feel of the park, and will definitely return.

Sites are assigned when you arrive. Also, there's a daily charge per person at all Texas state parks which is on top of the nightly camping charge. So if you're staying in Texas for more than a few days, the state pass is well worth it.
My biggest beef was how unlevel my site was. The pull throughs looked to be more level but the back ins were pretty rough in that dept.
The park is beautiful and hiking/biking are right outside your door.
Staff is super cool, the price is right. The only thing lacking is full hookups...which is rare in state parks anyway so to be expected. If I were coming back to Austin I would not even consider staying anywhere else.
Site accessibility (Roads inside the campground were a bit tight but nothing you can't manage) - 3.5
Campground location (15 min drive to downtown Austin) - 5
Nearby amenities (Everything you could need was within a few miles) - 5
Site Privacy (Very large sites. Not a ton of foliage between them so you can see everything your neighbor is doing) - 4
Campground amenities (No laundry. Dumpsters were easily accessible.) - 3
Dog friendly (Fantastic hiking for the pooches. Accessible directly from the campsites) - 5
Activities (Hiking trails which are also bike friendly, water activities and Austin is very close) - 5
Cost ($20/night for 30 amp W/E) - 4
Staff friendliness (Awesome staff) - 5
Connectivity (Good signal w/out a booster for both ATT and Verizon. Good OTA) - 4
Total rating = 4.35

1) The park rate is $20, but each non-Texas resident who doesn't have a park pass pays an extra $6 per stay. That adds up.
2) The visitor center was closed for repairs.
3) The entrance store was being worked on, so most of that was closed too. We couldn't even buy a fire starter there.
4) Part of the park was flooded out and we were not able to see some things we wanted to see.
5) Our site was not very level at all. Many were, but not ours.
Oh, +1 for the nice programs they have. We liked the full moon hike we did.

We stayed three nights and four days (Tuesday through Friday). The park experienced flooding last year so Smith Visitor Center and surrounding area was closed. Unsure when they plan to reopen at this point. The park headquarters were also under renovation as well, though slated for completion approximately 2 weeks later than our arrival. Overall, the staff was friendly and the grounds are maintained.
We stayed at lot 47 in the Grapevine Camping Loop (30 amp service). Each site is bordered with natural landscape. Native Texas hardwoods such as oak, walnut, and elm provide a shaded canopy overhead. There are hiking trails and swimming options available.
Having stayed at this parks numerous times as a youth, not much has changed about the park. The restroom facilities haven't changed in 20 years. There was plenty of hot water, but having stayed at Galveston Island State Park a few weeks ago, we were sort of spoiled with the updated facility.
I would definitely stay here again.

One night our neighbors played loud music all night through the early morning hours. The nearby camp host didn't ask them to be quiet.
I also didn't care for the showers. The water trickled out, so whatever part of you wasn't getting hit with water was freezing.
Other than that, McKinney Falls is a fantastic State Park. It's quite popular, so on weekends there can be a line from the entrance to the main road.
We got over-the-air HDTV including CBS (our favorite morning news).

The waterfalls were so pretty. My kids were in heaven. I wish we could have stayed longer, but it's a popular campground (for good reason!)
In my opinion, this campground is a must when visiting this area. Sites have picnic tables and a fire pit, and the RV sites have water and electric, with a dump station available. Two thumbs up!
