Even though there were a lot of spaces and the park was busy, there was good privacy between the sites so we didn’t feel like we were surrounded by people.
The downsides were that the water our campsite didn’t work and the bathroom was a bit of a walk (we ended up driving). There are hot showers, though we did not use them.

We picked up our first TT and wanted to do a trial run at a park close to home, in case anything went wrong. So we picked McKinney Falls. It is so close to Downtown Austin and there is a Walmart only 10 min. away. As soon as you pull through the drive the park is so spread out and tranquil. If you plan to visit other TX State Parks make sure to get the park pass. It is $70 and waives the park fee for two adults and gives you one night 1/2 off. Otherwise, in addition to the $20 campsite charge, you would have to pay the park fee of $6 per person per day. We are two adults, so it saved us $58 and pretty much paid for our pass for the year.
I read a bunch of reviews to try to find a great site, because many mentioned unlevel grounds. We started out wanting to stay in the Big/Little Oak area, and got our first choice spot of Site 3. Unfortunately, the heavy rains the day before had the whole site holding water as soon as you step of drive. We also went during the winter, so this area of grounds was brown and dreary looking. So we drove around and picked what we felt was the most dry and green site, Site 71. This was in the Big Cedar Camping area and was close to restrooms and dumpster. It was a pull through and offered so much space. The TT blocked you off from the road and it felt so private. The site was very spread out and even had a private foot path through woods to the trail. Only downfall was about 6-8 ft from the TT was about a 3' embankment with a few steps up to camp site. This was good though because it kept the site dry but we had to put most of our chairs, etc further away from the TT away from awning. If you have a short trailer the middle of the drive is level. Unfortunately, our slide prevented us from being in the middle so our back stabilization jacks needed a lot of blocks. The park host that lives across the street does have a dog inside that barked often. It didn't bark all the time, think only when it was alone. But when it did bark it wouldn't stop for hours. Sure most people can tune it out. We were just looking for a quite place to relax and read outside, so was a little annoying. But we loved the site size and privacy!

This is a gorgeous park, and it's obvious based on the amount day visitors that come for the beautiful water falls, water features, and well cared for trails. The sites are private and well spaced with water/electric (dump station easily accessible). This park is also super convenient for accessing Austin and provides a nice respite once you've had enough of the traffic and crowds. The park rangers were nice and helpful in finding us a site, and indicated which ones were available in our area if we wanted to swap if we saw something better once we got in... and maybe we should have. Site 19 was pull through w/ 50 amp, and it was very nice for privacy/scenery/etc but we didn't get a sense of how unlevel it was until we were getting positioned- we used all 20 leveling blocks on the drivers/outside to compensate. We would definitely stay at Mckinney again, but we probably aim for one of the other sites.
Update: We've now stayed at Mckinney on a number of different trips and in four different sites. The sites vary a fair amount in ease of positioning and level-ness. My 5 stars remains... Mckinney is a beautiful forested campground with the benefit of being nearby to Austin. The privacy and natural aspects of the campground are really impressive. That said, the sites can be a little tricky for large RV, and the pull-through sites in particular seem to be the most deceiving... often sharply angled and uneven front to back. We would definitely stay here if we planned far enough in advance (reservations are hard to come by on the weekends).

Our area was the largest camping spot we have ever been to. Some back in spots were smaller but this was freaking huge! 2 sites down was the bathroom and showers. The falls where walking distance and a great place to cool down. Several walking trails within walking distance as well. And you have Austin a few miles away. Some loud noise from the airport but overall I would stay in that spot for a month if it has sewer.

I've lived in/around Austin for 20 years, so I've taken many day trips to wade under the falls, but this was the first time to ever camp. There are a lot people who visit for the day, so it's not unusual to encounter a line at the Ranger station. The campgrounds are set a good ways away from the day use areas though, so once you're around your campsite, you aren't going to even notice the day-use traffic. The park was about 60-70% full when we were there (5/1-5/4) but because of the large, private sites, it felt even emptier. The site we were in (18) pretty much shares a spot with site 8. It'd be a great spot to share with friends...not so great if you're looking for privacy. No one was there during our stay, though, so it ended up being a non-factor. Our pull-thru site was easy to get set up in. There wasn't much shade in our spot, so I imagine the 50 amps to run 2 A/Cs will come in handy during those brutal Summer months
The "Big Cedar" and "Moss Loop" campgrounds seemed better suited to smaller rigs or tent campers, while the "Big Oak' and "Little Oak" areas could fit pretty much any size rig.... especially the "Little Oak" area. There were 40' 5th Wheels and huge Class A rigs in there. The majority of the prime spots, imo, are 30 amp spots. We tried to change once we arrived, but because I had reserved a 50 amp spot, there would have been a $10 administrative fee to change it, so we stuck with what we had. Next time we go back, we'll try to stay in sites 39, 3, or 6. The Little Oak bathrooms were clean, but the showers could use a little attention.
The trails are all relatively easy, although the signage could be improved. For being so close to Austin, the park has a ton of wildlife. Birds were everywhere! We saw owls, ravens, cardinals, buntings, hummingbirds, etc., etc,... I even got to see a rat snake battle two ravens one morning while outside making coffee. (It was a draw, btw. Somebody walked too close and scared everyone off)

The bike trail is in VERY POOR condition though, so be prepared for loose asphalt and lots of bumps! Also the playground was just 4 swings, much to the disappointment of our kids. The dump station, though accessible from 2 sides, only has one dump hole, so you’ll have to wait if there’s anyone there in front of you. The showers were very clean with good water pressure 👍🏼 We were lucky to be there during blue bonnet season and WOW, there were so many beautiful flowers in bloom!

This park was really great! Large sites but a bit unlevel. The Falls hiking was really great! Park rangers and hosts patrolled often and were very friendly. Facilities were a bit dated but very clean and well kept— but no soap provided. Kind of weird?

We loved everything about this campground except for the aggravation we had trying to get level. Otherwise, it was fantastic.
We lucked out with a very private site (#13), however we noticed most sites were really pretty great. Most are tucked in among the trees, with a few out in the sun, but all offer significant space between campers and, with all the trees, the overall feeling is one of separation and privacy. Every site has a picnic table and fire ring, and they were all placed in such a way as to give visitors their own private outdoor space. We were really impressed with the layout here.
As for location, you cannot get much closer to Austin than this state park. It took us about 15 to 20 minutes most days to get downtown which we didn't think was bad at all. Austin is a great city with so much to offer, but we also found some fun restaurants and food trucks outside the city. All were easily accessible from McKinney.
Our only major issue we had with this place was that our site had a massive slope. Like, we could have practiced our ski jump on it. It was ridiculous. Once we backed into our space, we had to use the majority of our leveling blocks to get the front level, and by the time we did, there was no way for our dog to get up the stairs. The bottom step on our camper was at least two feet off the ground. As we walked around the campground, we noticed a lot of other sites had similar issues.
All in all, we very much enjoyed our stay here and will be back.We just hope they grade the sites before we get there.
