We had purchased the State Parks Pass, and it's definitely going to save money on camping in Texas. This site was a tight fit for our 5th wheel. I recommend a pull through (and there aren't many) if you are 40+ ft. An overhanging branch scratched the back of our trailer, so we couldn't back all the way up.
We had an enjoyable hike. Though I did expect to see larger falls, I realize I'm not in MT anymore. We were 10 minutes from the capital, so did the tour. It was well worth going.
It's very quiet, and close to gas stations.

When we arrived our first impression was how lucky we were to be able to stay in a leafy, wooded state park at the bargain price of $20/night yet be just minutes from the downtown of a large and vibrant city. Our site was enormous, one of the larger ones we have enjoyed in over 100 different campground stays. Sites were well spaced and there is fairly dense tree and shrub cover so it felt extremely private. Utilities worked as expected, and we were just a few steps from the clean and serviceable bathhouse.
We loved having a variety of hiking options available right from the campground. The park is not huge but the trails have been smartly laid out to provide plenty of mileage for those seeking longer hike/bike options. While there is little opportunity for elevation change in this part of Texas, the park's hiking trails cover different types of terrain and offer the chance to see lovely forests, creeks, ponds, small waterfalls, and the remains of a historic homestead.
The really great part about this park is its proximity to Austin. We got everywhere we wanted to go in town within a 15-20 minute drive. This is a community of a million people, with the state capital and the flagship state university, so obviously there is no end of services (groceries, gas, car repairs, etc.) and activities (LBJ library, UT, museums, botanical gardens, awesome riverfront hike/bike trail, restaurants, and of course live music) and everything was easy to access.
Service on AT&T was strong despite sort of laggy speeds: AT&T Download 3.82 Mbps Upload 1.72 Mbps. There was plenty of over the air TV as well.

This was our first time staying at McKinney and we were well pleased. The sites are nice and open with a spot for a tent, picnic table, fire ring. Some sites had more privacy than other but walking around the campground, there weren’t many that I didn’t like. The only issue we had at our site was that we lost power twice. Apparently sites 5-8 are all on the same power strip. The park ranger told us that they have been having issues with this line and it will need a total replacement, just need to have the funds available. Once we called the park ranger came to help us out. He also showed my husband where the main switch was so if it happened again we could walk over and fix it ourselves. We only had to do that once. It was not really a big deal for us. The park is well taken care of. Just remember you have to pay the park entrance fee on top of the camping fee. Close to downtown

I used to live in Austin and didn’t realize that McKinney Falls had 50 amp sites. What a great find! Sites very quite a bit in size and accessibility but they are all nice. We only stayed overnight but will definitely stay here again when visiting Austin. The only suggestion we have is to take a drive by your site before deciding which way to approach if you can. The park staff (at least the day we arrived) are not RVers and so don’t understand about which side hook ups are on or which way is better to back in.

We only stayed here 1 night to attend a continuing ed course nearby, but it’s a nice oasis near all the attractions in Austin. Friendly staff, beautiful waterfalls on Onion Creek, and great place to relax. Sites are spaced nicely apart, and many hardwood trees for some feeling of privacy. Yes, being a state park, the sites are a little lumpy and some are not very level. We stayed in Big Oak, site 20, a pull through, and barely had to level at all, but I saw that others were pretty short and sloping. There are only 12-50 amp spots, some of the most desirable sites are 30 amp. I enjoyed riding my bike and visiting the falls, although the water was muddy when we were there. Lots and lots of kids in the day use area and falls, summer day camps bring their groups here on a regular basis but I thought that was cool. We are State Park pass members so didn’t have to pay the $6/person per day entrance fee. Check in gals were so nice, a great way to begin your stay!

We picked this campground so that we could visit with a cousin who lives in Austin. Our stay was on a Thursday night in early April and although most sites were occupied, it was a quiet campground with the sites spaced a good distance apart. Some sites were afforded more privacy with trees. Our site (78 in the Big Cedar Loop) had a slight downgrade but it leveled out at the end and our 17’ van fit perfectly. Bathrooms were reasonably clean. Nice trails to see two waterfalls. Enjoyed our one night stay here at this time of the year (quiet with lots of wildflowers) but I imagine it would be a very different place on a hot summer weekend, a time I would not want to be there!

We've been living in our trailer full time now for 4+ months and have stayed at many places paying typically $0-$23 per night.
We chose this campground for it's proximity to Austin where we wanted to visit.
Staff was friendly. Sites were good sized and spread out far enough from each other to give good privacy. We had water and electric at both of the sites we stayed at, and really liked site #64 (big and private).
Trails for hiking and biking were nice, as were seeing the falls.
We could not give this 5 stars because $32 per night ($20 for site + $6 each person for day use) for two people is too pricey for us.
Probably okay for a local family to go for a weekend camping trip, but not for us.

We could not see neighbors on all three sides of us! Just beautiful trees and greenery. The hiking trails were amazing. However the best part was the proximity to downtown Austin. 20-23 minutes to most of our destinations! We will definitely stay here again. However, definitely make reservations in advance. We would have stayed longer than four nights, but the weekends were completely booked up indefinitely! The only downside we found, was that the bathrooms weren’t as clean as most other state parks.

Most of the main trails are partially paved so pulling kiddo in wagon was enjoyable. Trails led directly to the Upper Falls and Lower Falls. The Lower Falls were much better to explore by far, but it was nice to have both close enough for walking distance. Biggest disappointment was their "playground" that consisted of four swings. Overall would definitely stay again when we're in the Austin area.

This is a heavily treed park with a variety of sites/showers and McKinney Falls! The falls are a popular swimming spot and lots of places to slip into the river along it's banks.
There were some nice hiking trails. This is what I would think is a Urban park, but there are so many trees you don't realize how close the city is.
And, I've never seen so many fireflies at night! However, remember fireflies like damp, and so do mosquitoes. Plan accordingly.
Great family trip!
