To be clear, this review is from our stay in the middle of March, before Texas State Parks closed due to the coronavirus.
44 - We were in this site for our first night (we added on an extra day to our reservation, but couldn’t get it for the same site as the campground was fully booked.) This site was beautiful, nice wide flat driveway, you have your own little grove with good trees for a hammock! Lots of birds in the morning - the cardinals might drive you a little crazy with their songs.
Water hookup was broken though and very leaky. We had to fill water into our fresh water tank and run the pump rather than stay connected. Short walk to the showers and bathrooms. Facilities are what would expect from a state park: shared shower areas, water pressure kind of weak.
We had chosen this campground based on its proximity to Austin, which we didn’t get to explore since everything was closed down. What a bummer, Austin is one of our favorite cities.
6 - This is a fantastic site! We were here for 3 nights. We hung up our hammock and spent lots of time outside. Nice grassy area for a tent or two; this would be a perfect site for a larger family or a group of friends (you know, when it reopens).
The state park is awesome. We biked a bunch, took long walks to look at the wildflowers, walked along the falls. The park is beautifully maintained. Firewood is sold in vending machines throughout the campsites, but it’s real expensive (like $20 a stack; we skipped on having a fire).
Staff is wonderful too. On our last night, a ranger came around to tell us the park was closing the next day (4/20/2020) but by that point, the park was pretty deserted. Crazy that it went from full when we arrived to nearly empty the day we left, even before the park officially closed. Anyway, it was a great stay and we’ll definitely be back!

McKinney Falls State Park campground is a small and beautiful park hidden within the bustling metropolis of Austin, Texas.
To us, this campground felt like the best of two very different worlds. It was a close escape from the city. We could take evening walks to the waterfalls, had plenty of trails to get in all of our runs and hikes, but then also could drive into the downtown area in under 15 minutes! Our internet and antenna signals were powerful, yet the campground was tranquil, actually shockingly quiet for being so close to a big city!
We saw deer and a fox in the campground while we were there.
The amenities were pretty limited to the basics. But with a big town to explore right outside of the park, this was not a problem for us.
The bathrooms were a bit of a disappointment. It’s not that they were dirty; they were clean. But the shower situation was subpar. I’m guessing most people just shower in their campers at this campground. Each loop had two showers stalls, but the booths were in one collective “zone” with one curtain closing off the whole area. That was it for privacy.
Camp Store: Just a few basics check-in station
Convenience Store: A couple of options within 5 miles
Grocery: HEB: 4.6 miles away
Big Grocery Store: Walmart: 6 miles away
Gas: Many options within 5 miles
A $70 annual state park pass must be purchased to enter the park, even if you are camping there. Or if you’re a couple and staying there for less than five days, you can opt for the $6 per day, per adult entrance fee.

This park books up quickly, and was completely full on the weekend with no availability for several weekends out (we tried to extend our stay). The location is great. It was really hard to believe we were within Austin city limits! 10/10 would return if in the area. (Price reflects TSPP discount)

This has been my wife and i FAVORITE campsite on our cross country trip yet. The campsites were clean and on our 5 night stay we were able to enjoy the super secluded site (even though folks were around) and be able to feel like we were in the great outdoors but still 20-25 minutes to downtown Austin. There is plenty of hiking and biking to do in the park, and the campsite was clean. The ONLY complaint I would have is that the campsite we had wasn’t fully paved, more so half paved half gravel, so leveling was a bitter hard but we got it done. This will be our spot to stay in Austin every time, BUT it’s usually sold out so make your reservations EARLY. We were there 5 days and it was sold out completely throughout the week and almost weeks in advance. Their is also a $6 per person per night fee you have to pay on top of your reservation. My rate includes the fee for 2 people

As we’re staying at 6 Texas State parks over a 5 week period, getting the annual park pass more than paid for itself.
Love this park. So do a lot of people though, so make your reservation early. Lots of deep sites with good space and separation. Hike or bike down to the falls. Beautiful scenery.

I dragged my feet on getting the Texas State Park Pass — at other parks the nightly rate was reasonable even with the entrance fee, and I’m usually happy to throw money at parks — but seriously, just get one. It cuts the nightly rate down to ~$16 here, and about $12.50 at other, less popular parks. It eliminates the entry fees and discounts the second night (and only the second night) of camping by 50%.
There is such an abundance of good state parks that you can take advantage of the second night discount pretty honestly if you’re moving around from park to park in 2-3 night stays. (Practical for me, since I have a small rig. YMMV.) I also didn’t feel bad about using it to change campsites once within McKinney Falls inside of a week, since the park was mostly booked and I had my eye on a nicer site.
Texans like to camp, so BOOK AHEAD for weekends or you may find yourself hanging out at rest areas on Saturday night. As it’s February now, it’s always easy to find space mid-week.
Anyway — this park is great and the falls are unique. Good mix of people. Close enough for a midnight run to Voodoo Donut, which is open 24 hrs on weekends. Plenty to love.

The park, at one time, was probably out in the boonies of Austin; not anymore. It is now nearly surrounded by new apartments; land waiting to be built upon, an airport & a somewhat noisy road. However, this park is an oasis amongst all this. It is beautiful. I loved our grassy wooded site. We did not hear the highway at night as our windows were closed. Walking around the park on a 3-mile paved path you did not see civilization. The park is very close to downtown Austin, which is why I selected it. The only 'Austin' thing we ended up dong was going to the LBJ Library, which I had no desire to see but am now glad we went --- so many memories. As a heads up, on the Cedar Loop, all bath houses do not contain the showers; it is in only one.

We fortunate enough to not only camp at McKinney Falls for a couple days, but also volunteer as park hosts for 2 months in 2019. Even though the state park is in the Austin City limits and you have city noise, you feel a million miles away when you enter the park. Wildlife is abundant including deer, turkeys, fox, guinea hens, a variety of birds and even a ferral hog! The park staff is very responsive to camper needs and maintain a fantastic location. Camp sites are in two different loops and there is a shower house/restroom building and a second restroom building in each loop. Sites have water and electric, with a handful of 50amp sites. Some sites are larger than others, some are more secluded, some are better for camping with another family next door...everyone can find a site to fit their needs.

This park is beautiful! Only a 20 minute drive to downtown Austin.
We had good signal with Verizon but data throughput wasn’t that great. Besides that it’s an awesome spot! The showers were always hot and clean & the campground was well taken care of.

Stayed here 12/15/19 to 12/21/19. This is a very nice park and the proximity to Austin can't be beat. I think I was less than 10 miles from downtown, but if you've ever been to Austin you know that you can still expect about a 30 min drive because of how much traffic there is.
The park itself was nicely laid out and access to the sites was easy. I had a tree that was hanging over my site and came really close to my slide-out but I managed to get in without any issues. The site was huge and had a fire pit and picnic table. The restrooms and showers seemed nice. If you plan on having a campfire, definitely get your firewood elsewhere as it was $16/bundle here. I appreciated how large the dump station area was. With busy parks like this sometimes a line can form and there was room for several rigs in the dump area.
The hiking trails around the park were very nice. A lot of them were paved. The falls were kind of disappointing this time of year because they were almost completely dry, but I still enjoyed exploring the area with my dog.
