“Mayacmas - A secluded, sheltered campground”

There are several campgrounds on Cow Mountain. This review is about Mayacmas, north Cow Mountain.

It's a technical drive to get to this campground, right off the bat. It's a winding, steep dirt path with many dips and turns - my friends and I made it in my Audi, so any normal 4wd/awd passenger car would be able to make it so long as you drive slow and let other cars pass. Most of the cars we saw on the north side were lifted trucks.

Once you arrive, there are 2 main areas of the campground, 1 near the restroom, and 1 farther down the road. The first area has 2 campgrounds, and the second has what looked like 4. We chose an open campground around the restroom since it was more secluded and sheltered. We stayed in late august, and it got quite warm. There is no water up here, so prepare accordingly.

We enjoyed our 1 night stay here. There were some hiking trails nearby but it was just too hot to walk around. Saw a lot of shotgun shells around the area as well, so definitely a place to shoot if you're into that. Not much recreational things to do outside of that - not in this area at least. Cow mountain would also be a place to bring off-road vehicles like atv's.
