Stayed Labor Day weekend with a last-minute booking. When we couldn't reach the camp manager by phone, the Mattawamkeag town office was able to help us out (also by phone). The on-site staff is out and about doing maintenance often, which definitely pays off but might make them a bit difficult to reach quickly.
To get to the camp, drive right up Route 2 if you want to avoid I95! Google Maps got us here but really wanted to use I95 despite it being a straight shot on Rt 2. The camp itself is accessed via an 8 mile almost-entirely-dirt road with some prominent 2-3 inch high rocks, most of which are painted for visibility. Pickups and Subarus should be fine, anything very low will have issues. The road is twisty and the town actively promotes ATV use throughout its trail network, so use caution!
Thankfully, the trail network along the stream and around the park is expansive enough that ATV noise is not an issue. The actual camp sites are nicely spaced from their neighbors; it's easy to feel secluded if that's what you want. Many sites have lots of very fine, almost sand-like gravel, smaller tent-or-teardrop sites are grassy. Facilities are old but are maintained daily, showers and bathrooms included. Management is amiable and helpful with split wood available by the front-end-loader bucket load or armload. Water and 30/50 amp access available at many sites. Lots of good sites for tents and small campers, some larger ones, too.
Overall, the experience was excellent!
