Overview of Maternity Well Group Campsite
This is a group camping location. This group site can accommodate up to 150 people or 30 vehicles with horse trailers or recreational vehicles. A Special Recreation Permit is required to camp here. More information on this permit can be obtained by calling (520) 258-7200.

Very convenient and close to the highway. Beautiful mountain views and large parking area. Ten minutes from Sonoita and a dozen wineries.

In this video, we take you a free camping area at the Maternity Well camping area within the Las Cienegas National Conservation Area in Arizona. The campsites at this BLM free camping area are big rig friendly. Verizon cellular service clocked in at 93.9 Mbps download speed and 7.28 Mbps upload speed. AT&T cellular service clocked in at 17.7 Mbps download speed and 17.3 Mbps upload speed. There was no T-Mobile cellular service at this location. Came down to go into Sonoita and hit the wineries. Not as many spots as other areas, but we just had one rig so it was fine. Only 5 minutes from the highway making it easy to get out and down into town. Very quiet and peaceful.

Pulled in and checked the website. Seemed like I could camp there. Got all set up then went to read the sign and it said that individuals were not allowed to camp there. Sign gave several suggestions on where to camp.

There are numerous places to camp when you turn off from Rt 83. We chose the first turn off which is about a mile from Rt 83. The road is 6900A is about a 1/4 of mile long and ends at Empire Ranch. There are numerous places to camp when you turn off from Rt 83. We chose the first turn off which is about a mile from Rt 83. The road is 6900A is about a 1/4 of mile long and ends at Empire Ranch. We had a great spot with views of the mountains around us and the sunrises and sunsets were awesome. If you travel further down 6900 which is a paved road it will take you to Live Oaks which is another primitive camping area.

Just a short distance from hey 83. Easy access for motorhomes. Have a 38’ with tow. Have Verizon cell and a TOGO using ATT, both worked.

Maternity Wells is designated as a group site and all the signage indicated that it requires a special permit to camp here. If you’re not part of a group or event, head for Oak Tree or Cienguitas instead.

“Great Spot but IMPORTANT UPDATE about Air Strip and Maternity Well Group Sites”

We just got finished (April 2023) our stay of 14 days over at Cieneguita Campground and while there had a chance to talk to the ranger. We were informed that both the Air Strip and Maternity Well camping process is going to be newly enforced. We just got finished (April 2023) our stay of 14 days over at Cieneguita Campground and while there had a chance to talk to the ranger. We were informed that both the Air Strip and Maternity Well camping process is going to be newly enforced. To stay in those areas you must be with a group (size requirements listed below) as well as have a permit. We found the gate to the airstrip locked (and no one inside) when we arrived. They are still in the process of placing a fence around Maternity Well but once they do that same requirement will be imposed. She indicated that if you camp in those areas and are not part of an organized group with a permit you will be asked to leave.

Oak Tree Canyon Camp (directly next to Airstrip, approx 8 medium spots)

Returned to my rig at the end of the day to find a bright orange BLM warning notice attached to my RV. It stated I was camping without a permit and I must leave immediately.

We did not stay at this site but checked it out. At the turn for this area is a kiosk. Park there and walk the short distance to check it out if you are in a big rig.
