“Nice but limited”

Reviewed Jul 03, 2017

Overall Rating

The park has a lot of things going for it. It's quiet although near a road, some sites have partial shade. The grounds are clean and well maintained. Sites are paved and spaced to give modest privacy. It is by the river, and within walking distance of a cute town with shopping, bars and restaurants. Just across the river is a nice walking/biking path, and it's also close enough (20-30 min) from essentials in the suburbs and Toledo. Downsides are 30 amp only and a questionable power grid. When the park is full on weekends, the park grid barely keeps up. Most sites have no water or sewer. The sanitary station is at the marina down the road, as are showers and flush toilets. The camp itself has pit toilets and some dingy restrooms in the basement of a day use building adjacent to the campground.

The park may also flood in heavy or consistent seasonal rains, so be aware if you choose a site on the river.

I enjoyed staying here for two weeks while working in Toledo, but would use the park with caution in the future.

“A Little Campground on the Maumee River”

Reviewed Feb 01, 2017

Overall Rating

We stayed here in July of 2016 at the beginning of our full-timing adventure. It was a neat little campground right on the river. Not a ton to the campground as it is just gravel back-ins with electricity. There are tent sites available in the grass nearby without power. At the marina we were told was a brand new shower house, but we did not use it.

The small town of Grand Rapids nearby was fantastic. It has a really nice park along the river that was connected to the campground via a short trail. We enjoyed our evenings by riding over to town for a meal, shopping, and an ice cream.

There is apparently really good fishing at the dam in the river near town. We saw a lot of fishermen pulling out some good catches.

Easy Living on the Maumee River: Mary Jane Thurston State Park, OH

Although it is a small park, the sleepy little town of Grand Rapids is cute enough to make your head spin. With ice cream shops, antique stores, the giant town clock, and an adorable restaurant overloo...
