Wife and I did our first hammock only camping trip. We went over the Labor Day holiday and the park was sold out. Even at capacity there was enough room to spread out a bit. The sites are large and accommodating over in the Walnut Ridge Unit. WR is primarily RV with 50A hook ups and potable water. Hen House Unit is more of the tent onl... more

“Wonderful Find”

We were looking for something not too far from Houston and decided to try this park. We were not disappointed. There are two sides to the park, divided by the highway - Hen House Ridge and Walnut Ridge. We stayed on the Walnut Ridge side. The sites are further apart and there seems to be more shade on that side. Henhouse sites are also... more

We were the only ones in the park due to the pervious Hurricane Harvey damage and certain closures in the park. We stayed here for three days. The bathrooms are very clean. The park is beautiful, I was watching the leaves fall getting ready for winter time, ahhhhh!.....With awesome sunrise shadows, and lots of birds chirping. Very pea... more

“Beautiful Park - But Confusing Management”

Reviewed Mar 25, 2016

Overall Rating

This is an absolutely beautiful park, with nice sites with great views and space around them. If you're able to get a waterfront spot, it's likely you can launch a kayak or boat right from your site. The park is a bit confusing upon arrival however, which is our biggest ding. There are two campgrounds - which are on opposite sides ... more

“Very pretty camping spot”

We stayed here to visit the nearish by Columbia Space Shuttle museum - in Hemphill an area of Texas where much of the Shuttle debris came down. We'd been in Houston for a few days and were so happy to find this peaceful, beautiful spot to camp on our way east. We came in after dark, and didn't see the late check in instructions and map... more

There is nothing not to love about this gem of a campground. The sites are large, the views are magnificent, and the kayaking is top notch. We stayed in site 108 which is located in a small cul du sac with great sunset views and easy water access. We were able to put our kayaks in right from our site and enjoyed many hours paddling thr... more

“Peaceful, close to home, on the water.”

Martin Dies Jr. State park was my first outing with my new Airstream.
It was an hour away. Campsite #9 was close enough to the water that I could launch the canoe right from my campsite. The rest rooms were clean, there was a fishing pier and the canoeing opportunities were plentiful.

“Large park with plenty of activities.”

Reviewed May 30, 2015

If you enjoy biking and kayaking/canoeing then you will like this park. It has two sections on opposite sides of the road located on BA Steinhagen reservoir. We would recommend staying on the Walnut Ridge side and prefer sites 117-122 as they are large and on the water. This park has some swampy areas so would recommend mosquito spray ... more
