Been there, done that = a wonderful experience! Much less $ expensive $ "housing" while on the island! You can tent or car camp here, reservations needed! There are more expensive buildings to rent, etc. but highly recommend the tent or car camping. Check the website closely and read ALL the rules. The entrance/exit gate is closed 7 pm - 7 am = That means you must return before 7 p.m. and cannot leave until 7 a.m. Really. There are people during the day that can visit the beach but that is mostly on weekends and they have a separate place to park. There is a hardware store and fast food restaurants in Laie, a 4 minute drive south. It would be a little over an hour drive to Honolulu and you are 5-10 minutes from the "North Shore" while many consider you are already there! Ha! There are MANY EXCELLENT FOOD TRUCKS in the area, most are just a few minutes north on the highway. There is a very primitive, cold shower on site and flush toilets. The beach is good but it can be too rough at times for swimming and snorkeling...however it is a beautiful walk! MANY other beaches minutes away. The "site quality" rating only gets a 4-star because you will have sand in everything you have, use and wear, especially if there is rain. What a problem, huh? :) You can hear the waves hitting the shore at night in your car or tent! There is a small store (where you check-in) and a night security guy who patrols. As noted before, go on their website and read ALL the rules. ENJOY!
Fran would stay here again
