This is a spectacular little campground, tucked into a rock formation at nearly 7000 feet in the San Mateo mountains. We spent 2 nights here over July 4 weekend and saw 2 other vehicles the whole time. If you want isolation, you've got it!

Officially, there are 3 sites here, though there is another unofficial site just north of the campground proper, and other, dispersed sites out along FR 225. There are picnic tables & fire rings, but no water, and the pit toilet here is... old. Obviously renovation of a site like this isn't a high priority for the USFS.

The better access is from the south, though it's still not great; FR 139 out of Monticello isn't bad, but FR 225 starts off rough and gets worse. The northern access is quite a lot longer, generally just as rough, and featured 2 wash crossings which I don't think we'd have managed without 4-Low. Both directions would be impassable after heavy (monsoon) rains, so be warned.

Nonetheless, it's a beautiful spot, and if you have the vehicle and the inclination, it's a great place to escape the heat of a NM summer.
