“Popular and busy campground with a long sandy beach on Lake Erie”

Reviewed 7/14/2020

Days stayed: 2
Overall Rating

Long Point is a busy area for cottagers, boaters and RVers and also has a popular provincial park that sits on a large sandbar that juts into Lake Erie. Sites on campground loops (Monarchs Rest and Turtle Dunes) are more private while the sites in rows (Firefly) are quite exposed to each other. Cottonwood campground is located down the road from the main park area, surrounded by private cottages but has it’s own beach.

Campground has a boat launch with parking, comfort stations with showers, a sanidump. Water spigots located throughout the campgrounds and quite a few electric sites available.

Huge day use parking area with room for 600+ cars. The dog beach is at beach access 2 near day use and beach access 11 past Turtle Dunes. The beach goes on a long way and you can walk up and down the whole thing. The beach is narrow in places and there is some tree cover you can enjoy. Water is clean but not clear as it is generally windy and wavy here. Expect it to be very crowded in summer. Long Point is considered a destination park and is designated a World Biosphere Reserve with sand dunes and marsh wetlands.

On the way in you will pass Big Creek National Wildlife Area which has walking paths through the marsh. Be prepared for the horseflies in summer.

Cell signal was good in mornings and evenings but poor during the day likely due to tower congestion due to crowds in July.

“Beautiful beach with a very crowded campground”

We stayed here one night on our way across Ontario Province in September of 2016. We were excited to visit Lake Erie, and had read good things about this park online/ seen images of its lovely beaches.

Unfortunately our experience wasn't the best. Campsites tended towards the smaller side which meant we were pushing the limit in terms of maneuverability with our bus. Smaller vehicles, trailers, and tent campers would be fine. The on-site electric hookups are actually communal, meaning that there may be one power station for several sites to share. Our usual 30amp electrical cord proved to be too short for this set-up in most sites and we had to change locations to find a good fit.

One of the things that struck me the most was just how crowded and packed this campsite was when we visited.(I guess we just hit it at the height of the summer vacationing season. Perhaps it would be different at another time during the year.) It felt a bit like we were packed in like sardines, and while there are some campsites interspersed throughout the trees with slightly more privacy, many areas don't offer any buffer between sites.

Okay, that's the negative side. On the positive side, the lake itself is truly beautiful. Calm waters, clean beachfront, great swimming and recreation opportunities, pretty sunsets.
