Loved camping here for the night. Kids had fun running up the hill - we left for ice cream at night and used the dump & fresh water across way at shell for $10

Had to go around the barricade on Kelbaker Road. In fact a police officer suggested doing that and finding this spot. Distant views of the interstate. Quiet. Just what were looking for.

The road is was ok. There are some soft spots, potholes, and washboard. The campsites were trickier. The ground is so sandy and soft. We ended up just parking in a turnout to avoid getting stuck. There are lots of ruts, but we managed to get level. It’s really close to Baker, so it’s convenient and there is good cell coverage.

This location is more than a mile down a very rutted and washed out dirt road, tucked behind a giant hill which blocks most of the Northerly wind. I want to emphasize how bad the road was so you’re prepared, but it’s doable in any size rig. The condition of the road will largely depend on what the recent rains have done to it.
It’s located just inside the Mojave National Preserve, with a stay limit of 14 days per visit. You’re allowed two visits a year at 14 days. 28 days in one year, very generous!
Since this location is close to the edge of the preserve, the internet was amazing. 30mbps 4G LTE on AT&T and Verizon.
The town of Baker was less than 10 minutes away. In fact I15 was under two miles away, visible in the distance. Very little road noise. It was cool to watch the freeway pulse and breathe at night.
Dump and water is at the Shell down in Baker. The cost is $5, and BTW save your receipt because that’s good for 7 days. Also in Baker are two Beef Jerky Shops. The Alien themed one is O.K. but the other one down the road is a lot better. Tons of options, free samples, and great customer service! And lastly, the worlds tallest thermometer! With an interesting back story as well. Be sure to check that out.
For stuff to do, check out the Mojave Desert Lava Tube. You can climb down inside! Also check out Teutonia Peak Trail that goes up Cima Dome. It’s a short, 3 mile, easy hike up to some pretty commanding views of the worlds largest concentration of Joshua Trees!
The only bad thing is that there’s no friggin grocery store! Uggh. Seriously though, we would have stayed here forever if there was a grocery store. But there’s a few fast food joints right in Baker. The only other thing was that there was A LOT of glass. We cleaned up the entire site, including in and around the ginormous stone fire pit.
