Lincolns New Salem Historic Site

Electric only, dump station with a few water pumps scattered throughout the park. Nicely shaded sites, only 3 other campers here at 2 pm on a Thursday. Easy 0.5 mile walk to Lincoln’s New Salem village site. Friendly campground host. Sites seem well cared for.
Would definitely stay here again. Price $46 for 2 nights.
2 miles to Petersburg with gas stations, convenience stores and country Market grocery.
Only negative- several dead trees next to sites in non electric campground that need to be removed.

What a treat. only a few others in a large shady park. And a well groomed park it is. Large trees covering almost the entire camp area. Protecting us from the afternoon downpours that came through to cool things off a bit.
I heard that a bluegrass festival happens 2nd week of September and the place will be packed. No reservations so beware of that weekend.

It's a nice park-like setting with grass and mature trees. Some sites are a bit close together, but overall not too bad. Plus, it is has 100 electric sites, so we were able to keep some distance from neighbors. One nice feature is that it is a quick walk to the reconstructed town of New Salem where you can see buildings from the time of Abraham Lincoln. The visitor center and buildings were closed due to the pandemic, but we were able to walk through the town and read the signs.

We were there in mid-June and the gnats
were pretty bad even though park staff kept the grass cut. Many people had brought bug screened rooms and clearly they had been there before. We liberally applied repellent and were able to survive.

My one complaint about the park is access to fresh water. There are hydrants sprinkled throughout the park, but your site may be 100 feet from one. Unfortunately the hydrants are in the center of the camp loop, so there is no easy access without pulling in to a camp site ... which is likely occupied. It would have been a preferable design to have at l;east a few hydrants along the road. There is no potable water available at the dump station.
