Only a few miles from the Laura Ingalls homestead. Bathroom and showers very basic but doable. Overnight price $15 , you can’t beat that! We will stay again! Lots of construction in town made it hard to get to.

The city park adjacent the campground has trees and is a good place for children and dogs. Restroom building with storm shelter.

It's a quaint little park, 30 and 20 amp connections with ample water spigots. The spots are reasonably spaced, and the surrounding neighborhood is peaceful. I was the only person there on a cold mid October Sunday night. The first hard freeze had just occurred, so water was off. I chose a longish site so I didn't have to worry about the nose of my truck being in the drive. I doubt anyone even cruised through the area that night, so no real worry anyway.
Access was easy. There is an archway at the entrance which appears to be around 13' but if nervous about height, there is a driveway entrance near the main road that will take you into the sites. Most rigs would fit, but expect to disconnect your trailer or toad. The corner grassy spots would be ample as pull through sites for larger units.
If you are entering town from the north, the park is on your left hand side, marked with a travel trailer camping sign.
I use project fi, (it uses three carriers), but I had full bars of 4g LTE

When you just need a place for a short stay, I would recommend this one when in the area. It took some careful driving to get into and out of the park with our 38' FW, but once in, you can't beat what you get for $10. There was one spot long enough for our trailer, but we had to detach our truck. We were the only ones there on a Saturday night in Sept., so we just parked on the site next door.
The sites are dirt, but they were maintained and fairly level. The site we were on had a fresh load of gravel/dirt on it. There is 30 amp at the back of the sites. There are some water hydrants, in fact there are two sites where you *could* park and reach a water hose to your city water connection on your RV (we did this, but only because we were the ONLY ones there). The trees are big and the grass is nice. There is a playground with fairly recent play equipment, and a pool (though we didn't check it out). It was really quiet.
The most difficult part was driving through the two big trees at one of the entrances because we were too tall to fit through the entrance with the arch. It's doable, but I had to stand outside to make sure we didn't clip anything.
Would stop here again on the way through - maybe even a few nights.

Slept here to go back to De Smet for Laura Ingalls stuff. Was nice for the kids w the playground. Did not have time to utilize the pool. Surrounded by neighborhood and park. Me and a motorcycle were the only ones here. For more than a night I would stay at nearby (Thomas?) lake.

The Lake Preston City Park is a truly a gem along the US Highway 14. It is very easy to find and has 7 gravel back-in sites each with and electric post with 20A & 30A plugs. Although one site is pretty small and on top of the site we picked, the other 6 are big enough to handle any reasonable sized rig. The park is on Park Rd. (surprise) which is in the eastern part of town, but you can easily see the park facilities from US14 - just look for the public pool with an adorable Finding Nemo mural painted on the side of it. Once you turn down park road you will notice that the main entrance to the park goes under a sign that is marked at 11'6", but if you just go down the road another hundred feet you will see another entrance to the park - this one is a touch narrow between two big oaks but nothing unmanageable. In addition to the electric at each site, there were two water spigots in the camping area and an RV dump located right by the donation box.
The Town of Lake Preston is only about 550 people but it has charm by the boat load. We enjoyed the community pool for $4 per person and found it to be clean, safe, and well run by the staff of seemingly all high school age kids - they even have pool noodles and other toys you can use while there. The rest of the park also has various playground equipment, disk golf courses, bathrooms, and some nice grass fields. Although we were clearly the outsiders in a town where everyone seems to know everyone we felt incredibly welcome by anyone we encountered.
If you are traveling across South Dakota I would highly recommend US14 instead of I90, it is a mostly well paved and very lightly trafficked route that brings you through very hospitable towns like Lake Preston. We unfortunately only stayed one night as we were on our way to the badlands, but once we got there we considered changing our plans to stay a while and check out the lake but instead just enjoyed the pool and evening with electricity and then filled up with gas at Boomers (easily $0.25/gal. cheaper then other stations on US14) and were on our way.
