Question about Lake Holloman Dispersed Camping

big al asked on 4/21/2022

Is it usually crowded? It’s close to White Sands so I assume a lot of people will want to stay there. What are the chances I get there and can’t find a spot?

If crowded and no place to stay, the best free alternative is Walmart Alamogordo.

It can be. Like any place, the earlier you arrive, the more options you have. The spaces by the Water fill pretty quickly, but there are more set back from the water, even some across the road.... or at least I saw people parked there. While there are some designated with a fire pit, the closer you get to dark, the more people stopping for the night are just squeezing in where they can.

When I went, there were probably 5 or 6 other rigs there and I was able to park well over 100ft away from anyone. Everyone was parked at the water, but there’s also space that’s just sandy and flat with bushes and I had that whole area to myself

When we were there it was not. Although there were a few campers, we were very spread out. I am confident there will be no issue to finding a spot. Whites Sands was very crowded, but that did not impact us finding a spot.

Yes, it is usually crowded and yes, I think you will be able to find a spot. There were tons of people there when I stayed, but the parking area goes back for a long way and there are a lot of spaces where you can do a makeshift parking spot.
