The canals that surround this 2 island state park do have alligators. By backwards I’m referring to the power and water outlets are on the wrong side most of the pad. We did not need the dump station but it look like it could be on the opposite side the discharge controls. Make sure you are supplied. No stores close by. And no cell coverage. If you depart to the south toward US 90, the road is 13 miles of gravel.

There are several options on routes to the park, the route from the south includes about 10 miles on a gravel road, named levee road. We used the route from St Martinsville to get to the park and left on the route to New Iberia, which is the one we'll use and recommend. Bring your mosquito spray, evenings and mornings they can be pesky. We loved it and plan on returning to do a little more exploring. 8 miles down the gravel road are some huge cypress trees, like none you've ever seen.

The BEST FHU sites would be 42, 46 and 48 because they back up to the canal and have private docks. If you have kids and want FHU sites 47 and 45 would be great because they back up to the playground. 43 also backs up to the playground, but not as well as the other 2 sites. 47 is next to the dump station so that could be an issue for some.
On the hiking trails we saw an owl, a nutria, and lots of woodpeckers, herons and anhingas. We didn’t go kayaking because it was pretty cold during our visit. Definitely take the time to go to the Tabasco factory while you’re there. Well worth the drive!
The one BIG caution is the water is not drinkable. They failed to tell us that when we checked in, but I saw the warning on the state park website so be sure to ask when you check in. By the end of our stay the water was orangish and really disgusting.
We have AT&T and did not have service at our site.

We had a water and power site with what we call the "geezer discount" - half price for seniors and averaged just under $15 a night. The sites along the water have their own little decks over the bayou! The pros: deck, quiet, laundry facility, great trails, lots of places to walk etc. Cons: cell only worked on the marsh overlook deck. As others have mentioned, the park is kind of out there by itself, but to us worth the drive.
Great place to base from to visit New Iberia (we love James Lee Burke) and Avery Island - home of Tabasco!
Am linking a video on the campground, trails & our visits to the two places mentioned above.

This a great fishing getaway and very nice state park. No WiFi or cellular service from any carrier. 30 minutes away from St. Martinville, LA. Great off the grid experience.

We stayed in this park for a week in late January 2022. The trails were very nice and interesting although they could be soggy depending on recent rainfalls - we had some rainy days during our week. It's a very remote location which has it's pluses and minuses. Obviously, there are no city or road noises since it's close to nothing - so that's nice. As we get older though, we like to have cellphone service in case of emergencies and to keep in touch with people - since when we travel it's not just for the weekend - it's for the whole winter. The park really had no cellphone service. We would rarely get one bar for Verizon, but even then it was just for a minute, then it was gone.
The campground itself is very nice - the bathrooms were very clean. The campsites were very nice also.

There were some mosquitoes in the swampy areas of the trails, but when the temperatures warmed up to 69° at night, the mosquitoes came out in hordes and way too many found their way inside our RV. We never figured out how they were getting in, unless they were coming right through the screens. We picked up and left the next day.
Not enough Verizon signal at our campsite but there was two locations out on a couple piers by the water where you could download emails and send texts.

Great location to view some of the swamp/bayou lands of Louisiana! Pretty expensive stay for what it is and a few flooded sites - understandably since it’s in a swamp. Worth checking out and hiking around

We were able to fish and kayak from our site. The down side of that was the frequent boat traffic some of which did not obey the No Wake signs. The major down (or upside depending on who you are) is ATT had absolutely no cellphone service. Great for a weekend getaway but not somewhere I would stay a week.
