People, and governments, around the world should know the effects of global warming. If it can almost kill a big lake, we might just run out of fresh water in the near future.
But the area is good for camping. Well maintained with toilets and trash service. I camped near the boat ramp with the 2 trees. Not to many insects. Temperature was comfortable. Cold at night but tolerable.

Found this little gem in the Maxwell Wildlife Refuge Park. Lots of space with nice views of the sunrise and sunset. We had a little rain and got a full rainbow. We were the only one parked for the evening. A couple of cars rode in and out but I believe it was to view the sunset.

The grass is best accessed from the lake side so you have a flat entry, rather than going down a small hill from the gravel road, so we ended up driving around the end of the loop (and past one of the other campers, which we felt bad for driving loudly past that late) before pulling in. In daylight, it would be much easier to see how to navigate, but wasn't too bad and we just wanted a place to park. Woke up to a nice view on either side and enjoyed breakfast before moving on. Great free spot.

Great spot to dry camp. Pretty view & area is quiet. No light pollution so star gazing was awesome & able to see the Milky Way. The dirt road in was long, but not too bad with our 2wd roadtrek, just had to go slow & enjoyed the views & wildlife. Being near a lake, mosquitos were out but not too bothersome.

Stopped here for one night. Arrived just before a nice 1 hour rain. Three other campers spread out in the public use area which is the only campsite around the lake. We found a spot under some large trees. The rain did a wonderful job of killing the dust that could have otherwise been a nuisance. Three more campers arrived before sundown and that about filled the available space. Place was clean and well maintained. Lake level was down so not really a “lake” location with water at current levels. Great location for birding or wildlife watching. I would suggest arriving early to get a spot.

You wake up to either the birds or the Ravens near the entrance. Couple of things to consider the dust from people driving in to fish or visit friends camping there and the moths. We were parked near the split and had moths 2 of the 3 nights in the RV. We had so many tucked into little spots that we would watch them get blown out of their hiding spot while we drove down the road and still found a few at our next stop. Other than that, it's a great spot to hang out for a few days.

First of all, off of Rt 505 make sure you take the Lake 13 Rd. There is a big brown sign for Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge. Our GPS failed and took us down another smaller gravel road before. The site was grass and a good location for visits to Angel Fire/Eagles Nest/Taos (The Enchanted Circle) and Sugarite Canyon State Park. It was kind of windy at night when we were there. Very quiet and there are park rangers just down the road and patrol the area. We had an issue with large moths when we had to pull in our full wall slide in as the wind was flapping our slide topper pretty good.
The ranger asked us if he should make spots more defined and make them a back-in, as people were kind of taking up 2 potential spots a lot of the time. We said it would be good.
For data we used our AT&T Nighthawk with a weBoost and was running 55 mbs down 22 Up and iPhone X LTE 46/24.

“If there are geese. Leave”

Beautiful spot 10 minutes from the highway, only 3 or 4 spots available but it was empty in October. The lake was filled with hundreds of geese and migratory water birds which made horrifically loud honking noises all night long. Even with ear plugs and wind it was still loud. If they weren’t here this spot would be exponentially nicer.
