La Clocha 2 is a few miles off the main road, 4-wheel drive vehicles only. The site is less than an 1/8th of a mile from the Rio Grande. Fairly level. A pack in, pack out site, and no ground fires allowed. The site is not difficult to get to, just turn onto River Road East and drive until you see the sign.
You can't see or hear your neighbors at all-- the nearest campsite is probably a third of a mile away. Views are great! We could hear the little bell from the burros across the river. There is a metal box to put your trash/food into to protect it from bears (we never saw any). Saw jackrabbits on the way out to the site, and my daughter swears she saw a coyote from the ridge the next morning. Gnats are bad at dusk, and after dark, we hung a lantern from a tree which seemed to attract all the bugs, and we had no problems. There was an amazing lightning storm the night we were there, and seeing the lightning coming from far away over the mountains was soooo sooo cool. You could swim in the Rio Grande from here easily (we didn't, I don't really recommend you do that, but you could if you wanted to.)
Lots of room for the kids to play and run around and get dirty and have a blast without bothering anybody, so of course they loved it and asked to go primitive camping again, saying it was their favorite campsite yet."
Nikki would stay here again
