We loved boondocking here. We faced our motorhome towards the motorhome and enjoyed opening up the shades each morning to that view! The cell reception with both AT&T and Verizon was good. It is a long bumpy road in. It was 20 minutes of 10 mph (washboard). You can stay closer to the main road but we really enjoyed being quite a ways in. We stayed just over a mile from the Palm Canyon Trailhead. We enjoyed hiking up to the Palms several times and took our Jeep over to Skull rock and did a hike near there as well. It is a dead end road so the only people coming in are to boondock or hike in the canyon. There is a "camp host" just along the road. There is also a labyrinth you can visit.

Beautiful views east and west. Easy to find a perfect spot. Mostly spread out, but usually pretty populated.

My favourite place! The area and the canyons here are just breathtakingly beautiful! Sunsets and sunrises and the way the colours change in the light on the rocks was just magical. Some wonderful hikes and explorations. Sites were very well spaced from just off the highway to all 7 miles of gravel to the canyon. It’s extremely quiet and the cell reception varied. The first site we tried had 1 bar, the next had 3. No amenities.
The road in was a little rough and wash boarded. But it was worth it. Can’t wait to go back.

Beautiful views.

The road before Kofa going through BLM leaves a lot to be desired.
While not rutted, it had some washboards that knocked just about every connector on my radio loose.
Once past the kofa entrance sign the drive up Palm Canyon got much better.
Weather during this trip was a bit rainy, and windy, but that was the same as most of the southland.
We got quite a bit of solar, even though the day is so short, and we had some clouds.
The only down side is that the sites are not deep. They require you to stay close to the road.
On the weekend there are quite a few cars that go up to the canyon hike. Most drive a reasonable speed, a few seem to think 55+ is the right speed.
I assume this may be one reason why a lot of campers stay outside of kofa in the BLM. You can REALLY spread out there.
We took a drive up Queen road (turn off right inside the kofa entrance sign) in the toad just to see what we missed. This road was one that would have been a mistake in our 31ft class A. I will leave a review for that road, since there don't seem to be any on Campendium.

As a relative newbie to boondocking, I found this location great for my skill level. The road to the camping area, as noted previously, is gravel and somewhat washboarded but navigable. I ventured within about a mile of the Palm Canyon trailhead and parked on the right hand side. My backdrop of the Kofa Mountains was stunning. While there were plenty of other campers around, it was not crowded by any means; rather, peaceful, serene and felt safe. Unfortunately, I had my first encounter with the dreaded chollas, which required tweezers and a shot of tequila. Do not wander around the desert in Birkenstocks.

The first 3.5 miles from turnoff from Rt 95 is BLM land you can camp anywhere you can find a spot. When you pass the sign for the Kofa Wildlife Refuge you are limited in where you can camp. You can only camp adjacent to the road. They have marked most pull off spots with stones showing the camp area. They have signs in some areas showing no camping past a certain point. There is a turn off before you enter the park that will take you over to Queen Canyon Rd. There is are numerous spots along that road There is a turn-off to the right about .5 after you turn on the road to Queen Canyon that heads up toward the mountains. The road is only passable for high clearance vehicles. There are numerous people that drive up to Palm Canyon in the winter months. Camping a distance from the road will reduce the dust. Great place to hike. You are 26 miles from Quartzite for supplies. We had excellent cell coverage with Verizon

The gravel road was well graded with some areas of wash boarding. Not a problem if you drive slow and enjoy the scenery. We drove up to palm canyon for a hike. The wind created a chill that quickly disappeared when we found protection of our trailer acting as a wind block. Set up chairs and enjoyed the sun and sunsets.
