“A Couple Of Days Turned To Four”
Reviewed 6/8/2023
I arrived after finding the Keyesville South closed and found a perfect spot on the north side. Good weather for early June, not too crowded. A few days a couldn’t see anyone from my spot. Had hikers go by and a few joggers but they respected the space and never felt on top of me. Running water close by.

For people out there looking for privacy, beware. Know the authorities do not care about you or your needs, and will ultimately force you to make a decision between staying in discomfort or moving to another campsite. For those who don't care about privacy, have fun.

I stayed here in my hammock (drove in with my Prius) on 2021-07-15 and 16 after finding the Forest Service land on the south side of the Kern River has been closed to camping "due to resource damage". Pretty much the entire area along Keysville Road after you turn off of CA-155 from Lake Isabella is BLM land open to dispersed camping as long as you keep your vehicle on the road, park in the established areas, and follow the BLM's usual dispersed camping rules. There are a couple of parking areas for trailheads right off the road within the first couple of miles, and I had no trouble at all accessing them in my Prius. The second one on the left has pit toilets and dumpsters (please use them if you're not going to pack your trash out) and can accommodate pretty large vehicles. I just parked there, walked a few hundred feet off the road, and slept in my hammock up on a ridge overlooking some rapids on the Kern River. Super convenient, gorgeous, and great swimming opportunities in the summer heat!
A few caveats: There is an area on the Kern about a mile in which seems to be a popular late-night party spot on the weekends, and there were some people playing music down there pretty late, though it wasn't loud or obnoxious. It does seem that much of the public land around Lake Isabella is, sadly, being somewhat abused by people making overly aggressive use of OHVs and littering in the areas near the river. I picked up a fairly large bag full of garbage others had left and took it to the aforementioned dumpsters. Some of what I picked up was literally within spitting distance of the garbage bins. Please do likewise if you are able, and at the very least clean up after yourself. This area really is a hidden gem and one of my favorite places in Southern California. If you're going to camp here, please do your part to keep it open for camping, and avoid the fate of the Forest Service land across the river that has been closed to campers, apparently due to abuse and irresponsible behavior.

I stayed here by the river for only one night and enjoyed it! I was there on a weekday and there were others camped around me that I felt safe being around. I am a woman in my 60s who camps alone so safety is important to me. I’m not sure I would stay here on the weekends though as I imagine it might get really crowded here and a bit rowdy. You have to travel on a sandy road so try to stay where other cars have traveled so that you don’t get stuck in the sand. I had full cell phone service with Verizon.

Drove to area on CA-155 from Delano - - - do not attempt with a Big Rig. Use CA-178 instead.

Vault toliets where clean. Free roaming cows shocked me to see. Very little shade in the area I was at. I would go again when not as hot or if shade is available. I was tent camping.

We were dissapointed with this spot. Surprised it has so many good reviews. The actual campground was very nice. But there seemed to be a few groups that were living there. We noticed that right when we arrived but decided to give it a chance anyways and not pass judgement. A few hours later four or five cop cars come zooming passed us. We didn't know what was up but it was a bit alarming. The next day we asked someone what was up. They said someone had been doing donuts and wrecked there car, but also cops patroll this area very frequently because it's quote "a hot spot for drugs". That information plus the endless amounts of cars driving through the campground at all hours of the day, most playing loud music made us leave. It was indeed a nice spot but the overall vibe of the place was pretty sketchy. We headed to Stine Cove which is also BLM about 20 mins from this spot and enjoyed it a lot more. Quieter, less people, and better views.

Vault toilet was fine and bins to get rid of trash.
Some noise from idiots shouting into the early hours, but as usual just depends who else is camping at the time.

I would say this is my favorite spot. Nothing else really needs to be explained other then if your rig is any wider then 7 feet and any longer then 23ft i would not attempt to go down by the river. There is a few other nice pull offs along the way but dont go down by the river very steel and narrow offroad areas.

Despite the view of his butt-crack we had a nice, relaxing time camped here and would definitely return. 15 minute drive in the Sequoia NP there is a moderate 0.5 mile hike to the Remington Hot Springs on the Kern River - highly recommend making the trek! There is also a Vons close by for your grocery needs. Bring your panning gear, or if you are feeling lucky bring your fishing gear too, and enjoy being lulled to sleep by the rush of the river at this Free campsite!
