You drive down the road and have to pass a few trailers parked by a house, must be housing for local workers. Otherwise, it is pretty isolated, can only see the other K-Bar site from afar. The views were great, and the site was clean and well-kept. Milky Way was amazing. Felt like I got to experience my own piece of the park all to myself for a few days.
The road in is pretty narrow, probably only suitable for a car, truck or camper van. I have a 2WD and made it down fine.

A $12 backcountry permit (good for up to 14 days) is required to stay here. The permits are available at the Panther Junction and Chisos Basin visitor centers and the cost is only $6 with a senior or access pass.

Big Bend is not the busiest national park as it is, but there is only one road through the place, so you tend to see/hear everything. K-Bar 1 (and 2) are more than a mile off the main road, making for a very quiet place to hang out while still being somewhat accessible to the rest of the park. That 1+ mile is down a very narrow and rough gravel road. The site was large enough to handle the 27' Airstream with only just enough room for the truck as well. I wouldn't; recommend much larger, if the NPS would allow you anyway. K-Bar 2 (a few hundred yards down the same road) is much larger with ample room to turn around if you need it.
The big issue with any of these back-country sites is the systems the NPS uses to book them; pretty much reservation by cave painting... Actually, you have to show up in person to book any of these sites, and you have to show up the day of, or day before, you start your stay. They will not book you a site (to START your stay) more than 24 hours ahead, but once you can book, you can book it for 14 days. Problem is, the Visitor's Center is more than an hour from the nearest town and these sites book up immediately, so you have to just keep driving out (2 hours round-trip) each morning, in hopes of snatching up a site within minutes of the Visitor's Center opening it's doors. Show up later, and you are likely not getting a site.
With a booster, we had very usable Verizon Extended Cell + Data
